I love horror but know that not everyone is into it... so I'd go with Opt-In Clauses and focus on monsters and less on internal horror. Monsters is easier to handle, imo, and less intense to figure out compared to internal horror.

I think it can work great, particularly if it's clearly part of the premise.

Admittedly, horror in-game is something that I've always wanted to tackle. I've dipped into it during Asakaze and Shadows. Even before writing started, Nakahama was supposed to be a horror game. Yes, really. But ultimately, given my mood and current events, I wanted something sunny and happy. It became the game that it is today.

That said, I'm still curious about taking a stab at it. It is most likely not sustainable for the whole game, especially either the edge wears off, or it might be too ridiculous to ramp up the threat. There is the idea to have it for a certain arc, storyline, tied to a disadvantage, or have it relegated only to segments of exploration. I'm not angling for a body count of any sort, but the danger should be there.

Getting started in PbP with Kyuden Shinomen and Maigo no Samurai Mura was pretty horror-ish. That said, I'm not a modern horror fan. A game with a lot of the Saw-esque stuff here wouldn't appeal.

I'm not sure horror works with my posting level either, since it tends to want responses to actually feel like horror. Being the character who either holds up the thread for hours till I can get home and post, or being the silent character in the corner as weird stuff erupts, only to snap out of the player-induced coma to go "omg...what?" after the scene has totally moved on is not the best. So there's definitely some logistics to work out to make a horror game actually feel like one vs what's been going on of a game, with some horror scenes that some people interact with.
