[Day 9, Mid-Evening] The Smokescreen

Kazushi and the twins arrive at the Temple in their standard business attire, looking for all the world like potential investors scouting the area for opportunities. To an extent, that's what they are, but their real purpose here isn't to put together a marketing profile, but to distract any local presence to allow for a specialist to do her more secretive job.

As they approach, Kazushi taps his communicator, giving Kotori the signal to proceed as he looks around for someone to engage.

During the day, the Temple of Light sat atop the Tenjin Town hills overlooking the farmlands and the coastal town below, almost acting as a beacon of hope. Kazushi's previous visit didn't have the temple in its best standing with the flood clean-up up but it was still bathed in sunlight and had heimen doing earnest work. However, the Temple had an entirely different vibe at night. The building was almost entirely dark, with only a few meagre lights visible inside, only one coming from the assembly hall and a few faint overhead lights in its "rooming" area.

Unlike last time, there were two vehicles parked on the side of the building, both with a tarp thrown over them.

Kotori had travelled separately, taking a different, more subtle approach to ensure her presence remained hidden. She could have taken the acting route, but she didnt have enough faith in her skills to be able to pass by discerning eyes under scrutiny. Sometimes it was simly better to be a shadow on the wall.

She hid in the surrounds, waiting ad even as the signal of Kazushi's approach came throug hte Communicator, she waited a little longer. Watching for any signs of activity as she prepared to make her own approach.

"Well, that's not ominous at all," says Kazushi as he slowly approaches the vehicles, signaling for the twins to stay back. If he can get a look under the tarp (either to see if he recognizes them or so he can identify them later), he will.

As Kazushi approached the vehicles, he could see the tires peaking under the tarp seemed to be hinting at a sort of heavy vehicle, especially with how much the treads dug into the dirt and the grass before driving off the paved portion of the temple.

There didn't seem to be just the Hida guard before port around, but there was also a Hiruma in a similar uniform on site.



"HEY! What are you doing here?" The Hida would call out from the second-floor window with her rifle in hand before the more obvious Scorpion and his entourage could approach anymore closer to the vehicles or building.

"I was scouting the town and thought I saw something moving around over here - someone with a flashlight or something," Kazushi lies, although it's not his most convincing effort.

Edit: I imagine Bayushi Courtier 1 might apply here, as well? That might make it a bit more likely, assuming they've got Mental or Social Disads...

There was a brief pause as the two Crab considered this.

"Better go check it out." The Hida in the building said. The Hiruma bowed, then began to carefully walk in the direction indicating, using a conelantern of his own.

The Hida spoke into a communicator, giving a brief summary of the situation. "This site is closed to visitors. You need to leave." She told Kazushi, scowling.

Kotori waited until she could hear Kazushi engage the occupants before she finally slipped towards the building, there was no telling how long asked have, and so she had no time to waste.

Kotori reached for the door, slowly and quietly trying the handle. Locked. Crouching down she inspected the mechanism. Electronic, with an access port at the bottom for programming. Fairly standard, nothing she hadn't seen before. She quickly moved to hack the door, connecting a device and running a script to deactivate the living mechanism. There was a satisfying click, and she slipped her device and value away. She paused to listen for a moment before slipping inside.

At night, in the dark, the corridors of the temple seemed almost sinister, shadows lingering where they shouldn't. Of course, one of those shadows was Kotori, so maybe she was okay with it. She is able to slip from room to room, avoiding the few people up and about.

In one such room, she finds what someone like her is probably looking for. A terminal, used for connecting to the local network (TN 25 to hack it).

"Ah, a daughter," Kazushi says with a warm smile as a new tactic opens to him. "I've got a little one myself. Changes your whole life, and how you look at...everything, really..."

For an experienced hacker like Kotori, it doesn't take long to sift through the garbage data and find the good stuff. Which is good, because there's a LOT of garbage.

What she does find is a lot of financial... shenanigans is probably the best word for it. Way too much money coming in. Another few minutes, and she can find that it's coming from a lot of suspicious sources; criminal, by the patterns. Then it comes out again, matched to donations, phony art purchases, empty charities, and the like.

"Ah, a daughter," Kazushi says with a warm smile as a new tactic opens to him. "I've got a little one myself. Changes your whole life, and how you look at...everything, really..."

The Hida laughed at that. "My daughter's twenty years old! She's no little one." There was another pause. "But you're right about that, anyway."

The Bayushi is able to occupy the Hida for another few minutes, and then the Hiruma comes back, shaking his head.

"That's...worrying," Kazushi says, trying to sell his concern about his alleged sighting. "Still, I've kept you longer than I should have, especially since the Temple's closed. It was a nice conversation, though, Hida-san."
