[Day 8 - Early Afternoon] Bid Event: The Great Hunt

Post by Boogiepop »

Despite the abundance of industries on the Green Carp, much of the wilderness is still untamed, and some would say it still belongs to the planet. The tradition of braving the wilds and hunting is popular among the Crab Clan samurai on this world, some practicing it to a degree where the game is arranged, but there are a few who would risk their lives just for the opportunity to dominate the wild. In honour of this custom and practice, Yasuki Ayame has arranged a hunting contest with all of the guests and locals here. This will give them the opportunity to not only explore some of the wilds but also potentially the chance to claim some glory along the way.

Each participating hunter will set out with a hunting team to aid in both travelling and taking down each game animal. The hunter will be tasked with leading their team to the intended target and also directing the first attack for the game's takedown. Depending on the target, this could be a foolhardy and dangerous endeavour for the hunter. Each hunter is assumed to have good judgment to hunt within their limits, but of course, the spirit of competition could potentially raise the stakes enough that pride could be a driving force for both the brave and the foolish. Please be careful, and good hunting.

Magic: Yes, but all spells will need to have at least an hour duration to be used.

The Hunt
Each participating hunter will be given a short amount of time in the wild, but their guides will be able to provide them with the optimal path to find their target. However, conservation mandates in place ensure that no particular animal can be targeted for hunting in greater quantities, except the greatshark. For this event, each hunter may hunt up to 3 Game targets of their choice but only once, except for the greatshark.

Those with the disadvantage Cursed by the Realm: Chikushudo suffer an additional +1k1 Damage on failure for killing the animal. In the situation there is no damage normally from failure, they still suffer 1k1 Damage. Those with the disdvantage Overconfident, it is triggered on participation. On failure, they must select either Game 4 or 5 once in one of their Game choices.

Hunters may still void for Damage, even if they previously used void for the previous skill roll that resulted in taking damage from failure.

Game 1: Redtail Tango Tuna
While Tango Tuna is the mainstay catch of the fishing industry, the size of the fish makes it difficult to catch them without specialized equipment and experience. The Redtail Tango Tuna is a rare breed of the main fish, identifiable by its relatively compact body and striking red caudal fin. The fish dwells closer to the shore and is quite skittish.

The hunter may make either a Hunting(Tracking)/Perception or Sailing/Intelligence at TN15 to locate the fish. On success, they may then roll Craft: Fishing/Intelligence or Craft: Fishing/Agility at TN15. They gain 1 Hunt Point on a successful roll and an additional 1 Hunt Point for each Called Raise.

Game 2: Jimen Tori
The Jimen Tori has been a creature that is only found on Shiawase Island, and its seemingly easy-going nature has made it endearing among the locals. Hunting them is extremely prohibited, except for occasions such as this one. Some visitors might not be aware of this 'honour' but may experience some cold shoulders from a few locals after their hunt.

The hunter may make a Hunting(Tracking)/Perception or Lore: Nature/Intelligence TN15 to find a jimen tori. On success, they may then roll a weapon attack skill at TN15 or a Level 2 spell casting roll. They gain 1 Hunt Point on a successful roll and an additional 1 Hunt Point for each Called Raise. This is done against a jimen tori, and it presumably has less Honour. The attack is done in Attack Stance.

Game 3: Golden Pheasant
The Golden Pheasant is not from the Green Carp and has been specifically brought for the occasion, known for its vibrant golden plumes. They have been released into the wild to be hunted, and likely have scurried to various places on the island to hide. The bird is not deemed to be invasive, but may likely still dwell around the island for days after the hunt before the population is thinned out by the local denizens.

The hunter may make a Hunting(Tracking)/Perception TN20 to find a Golden Pheasant. On success, they may then roll a weapon attack skill at TN20 or a Level 2 spell casting roll. They gain 3 Hunt Points on a successful roll and an additional 1 Hunt Point for each Called Raise. This is done against a golden pheasant, and it presumably has less Honour. The attack is done in Attack Stance.

Game 4: Greatshark (Repeatable)
The scourge of the sea and often the apex predator of the ocean, the Greatshark have plagued many fishermen and is deemed extremely dangerous. The locals seek to avoid the Greatshark in their routes, but there are a few who attempt to chase after the largest and most fearsome of the Greatshark for clout. Some deem this endeavour as suicide.

The hunter will need to make a Sailing/Agility at TN20 to rush out to open waters, where there is a great likelihood they will be hunted by a Greatshark. On success, they may make an attack skill roll using Firearm/Reflexes or Engineering(Siege)/Intelligence at TN20 or perform a Level 3 spell casting roll. This is done against a Greatshark, and it has less Honour. The attack is done in Attack Stance. If the attack is successful, the hunting party converge and finishes off the Greatshark, albeit with some difficulty. The hunter receives 4 Hunt Points on a successful roll and an additional 1 Hunt Point for each Called Raise.

If the attack roll fails, the hunter is maulled by the Greatshark for 6k3 Damage before the hunting party quickly retreats. Fail or pass, the hunter may choose to hunt a Greatshark again as one of their three choices or as a tiebreaker (see Outcome below).

Game 5: Volcano Lizard
Volcano Lizards are typically situated atop Mount Nakahama and steam vents throughout the island. On their good days, they typically leave humans alone unless they pose an obvious threat. It can be frightening how quickly the lizard can lunge at a target when provoked, which a hunter is likely to do when approaching with a weapon and a hunting party.

The hunter may make a Hunting(Tracking)/Perception TN20 to find a Volcano Lizard. On success, they may then roll a weapon attack skill at TN20 or a Level 3 spell casting roll. They gain 4 Hunt Points on a successful roll and an additional 1 Hunt Point for each Called Raise. This is done against a volcano lizard, and it presumably has less Honour. The attack is done in Attack Stance.

If the attack roll fails, the hunter is bitten by a volcano lizard for 4k2 Damage. They must also make a Stamina check (prior to damage) at TN15. Failure will cause an additional 2k2 Damage in poison (the antidote is provided if the hunter survives), and the hunter is Fatigued for the rest of the day.

Warning! Damage is not reflective of the actual creatures. Please leave combat to the professionals.

Outcome
Upon the return of each hunting party, the hunters are given refreshments for their hard work and adventures. Shugenja and medics will be on staff to tend to anyone hurt and stabilize any serious wounds. They will be healed until they reach the wound rank of Grazed. All hunted game animals will be tallied up by the gathering, and a winner will be determined!

If a hunter manages to bring in at least 8 Hunt Points, they will be awarded 1 Bid Point and +0.1 Glory.
If a hunter manages to bring in at least 14 Hunt Points, they will be awarded 2 Bid Points and +0.2 Glory instead.

The hunter with the most Hunt Points will be awarded an additional 7 Bid Points and an additional +0.4 Glory. The runner-up will be awarded an additional 5 Bid Points and an additional +0.2 Glory. This stacks with the above.

Ties are broken by the hunter who successfully hunted the most number of greatsharks. Then, if there is still a tie, this is determined by sudden death with further greatshark hunting until a hunter is injured. This event may close earlier to facilitate this.

This kind of thing, Kisha has done before; her parents wanted to make sure she'd fit in with people of her rank and what they hoped would become her station, so they made sure she could hunt and shoot with other wealthy nobles. Kisha would be among the first to note that she is out of practice with both, and she proves it early on, startling a pheasant from under her very feet and flustering herself such that she can't bring her gun to bear before it flies off.

The second pheasant, however, she spies while it is looking the other way, and a sudden shot takes it cleanly and quickly. The noise of the shot disturbs something larger, however, and all Kisha sees is the motion through the trees of something large making its way away at some speed. The sound of it seems to scare off other game, more's the pity.

It's not the best showing, certainly, but Kisha manages not to come away empty-handed. "It could have gone worse," she says as she hands off her kill for cleaning and cooking.

"You want to do what Susumu-sama?"

"Catch the sharks!"

"...."

----

Out on the big ocean, Sumiko looked entirely at home! Well not exactly, she had to hold onto the ropes constantly, nearly fell overboard three times, and didn't actually know what she was doing, but somehow the floundering around got the attention of a HUUUUUUGE shark (to Sumiko). She lowered the trap, and they snapped it up!

It was the only thing she caught, but that counted as a success to Sumiko.

The Shirtless Oshidama King strides onto the beach... Shirtless.... Again...

Starting to get a little stale? Possibly. Any less attractive? Unlikely!

The young man has never been out to sea in anything other than a ferry. Hence directing his boat is a challenge in and of itself. and finds it difficult to find his first shark.
0 Hunt points! 2 more Hunts left!

As the camera focuses on him, wet from the waves and illuminated by one of Amaterasu's sisters, inadvertedly the cameraman catches a glimpse of a fin on the horizon! He retrieves the provided harpoon gun, lining up a shot and wounding the beast enough for the rest of the hunting party to bag it.. He poses next it as it is lifted out of the waters.
4 Hunt points! 1 more Hunt left!

The Bushi takes to the waves one last time. Prowling the routes the predators take. It seems lighting CAN strike twice! as the party spots another one barreling through the tides towards them! He takes the gun once more. Wide stance, holding it up stable onto his elbow, tongue sticking out of the corner of his mouth as he lines up the shot. BANG The shot echoes above the waves as the beast floats to the surface.
8 Hunt Points!

Hinata returns to shore with two Greatsharks to his name!

Yakura knew what she wanted to do.

Get a great big fucking shark.

She got on a boat (her natural element) with some experienced sailors. "Now the trick, boys, is to look nonchalant." She replied from her vast experience (she listened to an audiobook once).

A great big fucking shork noticed the slim figure standing idly, and jumped up.

Unfortunately for him, Yakura wielded her sidearm in a cool, sideways style, and the single bolt she got off hit him in the eye.

"That was fucking terrifying! Let's do it again!" She yelled.

Sadly, the other sharks understood who was the true alpha predator here, and avoided the Mantis hunting party.

Re: [Day 8 - Early Afternoon] Bid Event: The Great Hunt

Post by Tamori Kanna »

Kanna had never in her life hunted. Unless it was hunting for a good deal at a sale, or a specific pair of socks to go with her outfit. And after yesterday's events, she felt some apprehension about hunting for sport.

Still, she had determined to be a good guest and participate in all the hosts would offer! So she managed to drag out some enthusiasm and gusto for this, and got down to business!

-

A Golden Pheasant sounded like something really pretty, and maybe she could get some good pictures of it at least. And besides, the dead animals would go to feeding some poor peasant families, right? Right???

Alas, the golden birb eluded her. She had no idea how to follow tracks or the like. At least there were some nice pictures of her and Kaida with a scenic backdrop!

-

"You know," Kanna began, and the people following her to assist in the hunt already dreaded the following words, "I already fought a volcano lizard once, and it was like totally super-easy! Let's go find one!"

She was, an adult woman, a samurai of the Dragon with some standing and pedigree, so they couldn't exactly tell her no. And moving towards the more volcanic areas, they did, in fact, find a volcano lizard!

"Haha! Water beats lava!" Kanna declared, splashing the oversized salamander with a torrent of water. However, Kanna learned that day that water does NOT IN FACT beat lava, but cause extremely hot steam and minor explosions as the lava expands! The lizard, mildly annoyed by this, did not give pursuit as Kanna and her crew ran away from the eruptions of acid, toxic steam, and hot bits of lava.

"This is not fair!"

-

"Ok. Something easier. I know where to find jimen tori at least!" Kanna really wanted to have something to show for her efforts, even if she didn't actually wanted to harm the big birds. They had been rather nice birds, the ones she met, especially the one she spoke to.

Still, she caught no glimpse of the birds.

-

On a nearby hill top, the jimen tori watched Kanna and her group move around obviously looking for something.

Image

"Blimey, old chap. There's been an awful lot of these humans around today, innit?" cawed one bird to the other.
"I say! You reckon they be lookin' for some food or the like?" cawed the other bird.
"Who knows? These humans are odd, that's for sure!"

She tried to find a volcano lizard to get it's skin for a pair of boots to go along with her lizard coat

She failed

She tried to find a pheasant for a tasty dish

They were nowhere to be seen

At least she found a Jimen Tori but thought she caught it with her chains, she could not bring herself to kill such a dignified bird

So she simply bribed it with food to show she had caught something before returning it to where it was found

Post by Kitsune Soratoshi »

Soratoshi did just as he was supposed to do. Track the creature through the woods, line up his shot, exhale while squeezing the trigger - but he missed the local bird and instead blew a small branch off a seemingly innocent tree. The clearly divinely protected bird vanished into the brush with a few angry squawks, and in a fit of pique, the Kitsune achieved a rather impressive distance in throwing the hunting rifle after it. Of course, later his weaponsmithing talent would show the rifle to have been defective, but before then, he was still on the hunt.

And he was angry.

A magnificent specimen of golden pheasant-tude had the misfortune to be Soratoshi's next quarry, and while the feathers and body remained intact for their valuable uses, the portion of the bird's head that the Fox had blown off was never located and meant it most certainly wouldn't be displayed on anyone's wall. The young Fox did, on some level feel bad about this - although his distress was probably more due to not being able to shoot the bird repeatedly as it was already dead.

Which, of course, meant that his next quarry simply had to be something tougher. And bigger. Much bigger.

In a very un-stereotypical display for a Kitsune, Soratoshi proceeded to take his hunting party out on the water, chasing the rough seas that suggested greatsharks at work/play. Soratoshi was no sailor - probably would have died had he fallen overboard - but his dander was up and there was quarry before him. If one looked close, perhaps there was even a glint of red in his otherwise beautiful eyes.

Exhorting his hunters-turned-sailors to push the boat faster, Soratoshi was rewarded with the shot he wanted: broadside, into the greatshark they'd been chasing before the massive creature could turn on them. The smile on the young Fox's face as he pulled the triggers on the deck cannon was near feral. The exultant laugh that he issued as the double harpoons slammed into the shark's body was wild, almost chilling. And the samurai just stood, arms crossed and grinning madly, as his crew coordinated the effort to finish off the now-vulnerable creature.

Haruhi had two goals for the hunt.
1) Find a golden pheasant and capture audio and video
2) Find a jimen tori and keep it safe from the hunt

The guides insisted the 3rd hunt be for another animal, so she planned to try catching a tuna again.

The golden pheasant proved elusive. Alas! But she had the contact information for the breeder, Yasuki Kaori-san. She could try to visit tomorrow when any surviving pheasants were resting.

She was able to find a jimen tori. She focused on leading it to a place of safety so it would survive the hunt. It was easily lured by fish. One jimen tori saved!

She actually spotted a tuna, so there was a chance there. But it wriggled free and also lived to swim another day.

"I'm not opposed to hunting. Predation is a natural, and necessary, part of a healthy ecology. Mankind has largely evolved beyond that role in our environment, but hunters still serve a purpose. We do still hunt for food, for ourselves or others."

Kiyoshi continued to explain that he hoped to catch a tuna to feed to the jimen tori and lead them to their traditional nesting grounds. The fishermen weren't that interested, nor were the tuna.

"Population control is important in conservation, especially in regard to invasive species. These pheasants may not seem dangerous, but any not captured today will be free to breed. If their population grows large enough, there will be a definite impact on the local flora abd fauna."

The Fox grew quiet, as the pheasant he'd been tracking came into sight. Touching the ground, he whispered to the earth kami, asking for their assistance. The ground beneath the bird fell suddenly, trapping it in a deep pit, where it was easy to capture.

"The overpopulation of large predators is particularly concerning. Competing with each other for prey will push dangerous animals out of the wild areas, threatening farms, suburban neighborhoods, and even city streets. Their numbers need to be culled before that."

The volcano lizard had followed the scent of the bait the Kitsune had set, placing it directly in the path of the landslide the shugenja unleashed. Injured and dazed, it was easy enough for the hunting party to put the beast down.

Re: [Day 8 - Early Afternoon] Bid Event: The Great Hunt

Post by Agasha Sorato »

Sorato admires wild things, but that doesn't mean he flinches from hunting. Death is a part of nature too, after all, and humans and animals have been hunting other animals since the Sun and Moon walked the earth naming all the creatures. If it's for a good reason, he can take an animal's life. Ancient tradition counts, as long as it's done respectfully and without waste.

He decides not to point his team after the jimen tori trail he spots shortly after entering the jungle, though. Once you've held a conversation with a creature--even through another shugenja as interpreter--that just makes it too weird. It may be a part of the code of the samurai that the friend you met yesterday could become your foe on the battlefield tomorrow, and you both have to carry out your duty and face death with honor... but unlike samurai, good-natured flightless avians didn't sign up for any of that, karmically speaking. No, leave the jimen tori alone.

So pondering as the group hikes through the foliage, Sorato catches a glipmse of a swishing movement in the trees ahead. Was that a red tailfeather? A golden crown? Yes--and, gesturing his teammates to quiet, he nails the pheasant with a colorless lance of spiritual energy. Pheasants aren't even native to this ecosystem, anyway, poor things.

Each hunter has been issued just one tag for a volcano lizard, and Sorato is eager to find one after seeing, second-hand, the one Ochiba and the others fought. More time exploring the hot and sticky depths of the jungle yields just such an encounter. This lizard looks like it might be headed in the direction of the farmlands--although, Sorato admits to himself, he might be inclined to draw that conclusion partly because it feels better than preying on a lizard just minding its own business. Still, the group takes the beast down quickly and efficiently.

Snapping on protective gloves, Sorato waves to the other hunters to stop before loading the carcass for transport. "Hang on, please. My supervisor will burn me a new one if I don't get a sample of that oral venom. Oh, huh. Those teeth are... very sharp. Very... numerous." Still, duty is duty.

Lastly, Sorato boards one of the fishing boats out searching for greatsharks. He's never had to navigate a boat before, but the fisherfolk assure him--not actually very reassuringly?--that greatsharks are everywhere in this season, you can practically trip over them. Which indeed they do--just as Sorato is beginning to relax on the assumption that he won't find anything else on this trip. Peaceably trailing his fingers in the water over the boat's side, the Phoenix nearly jumps out of his own skin when a huge greatshark lunges up at the vessel from out of the depths. For a moment it seems an open question whether he'll get to his holoslates before the creature takes his hand off. But he does, and the massive shark becomes his third prize of the afternoon.

Re: [Day 8 - Early Afternoon] Bid Event: The Great Hunt

Post by Kaiu Ryosei »

Hunting nor fishing had ever really been part of Ryosei's leisure time nor professional career but he had been laying low as far as events had gone these past couple of days and he realized he should probably compete a little. He had heard that there was actually a cooking competition at one point and missing that one had made him a little sad. Those were the days past though and today he was heading out into the open seas.

Him and his cadre of hunters sailed out fast and hard into Greatshark territory, The big spear guns on the ship were close enough to siege weapons that he knew how to operate them pretty well. He relied on his team to get them out there. It was oddly exhilarating cutting through the waves, ocean spraying up to cover them as they delved into dark waters. Eventually the boat rocked and the massive fin appeared behind them. the chase was on. The sped through the water evading the predator while Ryosei lined up the opening shot. He was leading the hunt so it was his honor and responsibility. The gun went off and blood was seen in the water. Other guns went off, the creature thrashed in their grip swaying the boat side to side as it was drawn close where the heimen with spears finished it. They hauled it up and stowed it. Many nodding in appreciation and whooping with excitement. The energy was electric and a smile spread across Ryosei's lips as he called for them to sail back into the waters. The men cheered.

When it was all said and done they hauled in three massive greatsharks, one even only had one wound as Ryosei had landed a shot so clean the great beast had died instantly.

Re: [Day 8 - Early Afternoon] Bid Event: The Great Hunt

Post by Yoritomo Ochiba »

It was a lovely day for a hunt! Or so at least proclaimed Ochiba to her nervous crew.

"We're hunting Great Shark! The bigger the better! If we return with their skulls (it's very important I get their skulls) we will be renowned as heroes. Fame and fortune awaits!"

The Mantis at least knew her sailing and the nimble fishing vessel surged out to sea until a fin was spotted.
"Cover me, I'm going in!"
With a rope wrapped around her waist the Mantis dives into the water. From above the crew watches in horror as the churning foam sparks and glows before blood begins to rise to the surface and Ochiba surfaces.
"Ah ha! Got him! Just a little shark though, there's gotta be something bigger around here than tha-"

There's an explosion of foam as something titanic slams into the Mantis, bashing her against the ship and leaving a dent before swimming away.
"....Fuuuuuck me."
She looks back at the shark corpse next to her.
"I think I pissed off its mom. Well at least there's nothing more like tha-"

Another huge shadow surges in from the deep and tries to swallow the Mantis who can be heard cursing, gouging and shooting as she's pulled down below before surfacing with another shark corpse.

"Fukurokujin's hair balls these things have hands. Okay, two skulls is enough to show we tried. Pull me up and try to mind my bruised everything."

Re: [Day 8 - Early Afternoon] Bid Event: The Great Hunt

Post by Utaku Itsuka »

Itsuka was no stranger to choppy waters or to Greatsharks, for obvious reasons - or even to Greatshark breeding season for that matter. A Greatshark hunting event being scheduled for breeding season, on the other hand, did give her some pause.

More due to safety concerns for the visitors currently in Shiawase Island than the sharks themselves, she thought after some quick mental calculus. Greatshark populations seemed to show no signs of decreasing, if sightings and rumours were any indication...

She was much more used to avoiding and skipping around greatsharks than actively seeking them out, of course - her clients usually weren't particularly enthusiastic about sighting one, after all, and usually, even if they found them interesting creatures, she'd rather not see them too up close.

That didn't mean she didn't know where to find them, of course - she found a first one rather quickly. Or, more accurately, it found her and her team... and it was a relatively big one too!
Now actively hunting the big'uns with a harpoon, that she definitely wasn't used to. But her training did guide her well - and while she wasn't by far a genius with machine, she knew her way around stuff well enough to handle it deftly for a swift catch!

A short time later, and another of the large predators showed up - a bit too close! Her instincts immediately kicked in, and she reacted as she always did... when touring. That is - gtfo as soon as possible, before someone could get hurt!

Which obviously didn't work very well for hunting. When she came to and tried to turn around to see if she could still find it and shoot it, the Greatshark was nowhere to be found.

But the choppy sea was definitely chompy today as well, and it didn't take long for another of the large beasts to find them - a smaller... erm, regular-sized one this time. (It wouldn't do to call that small, she thought and chuckled to herself).

After the practice with the larger one, that one was an easy catch.

It probably wouldn't be enough to impress anyone that much... but it was a decent catch she brought back. And maybe some decent work at population control.... maybe. Or were Greatsharks one of those species for which killing some individuals led others to increase their reproductive potential?... hopefully not??

Post by Kitsuki Ichitaiyo »

It would be an interesting afternoon.

Ichitaiyo donned her best wetsuit and set out hunting for sharks, emboldened by the offering she and Ochiba paid to Osano-wo not so long ago. The start.. was quite slow, almost dull, but as soon the action began, Ichitaiyo was quick to swing the barrel of her harpoon rifle and drive a stake right into the greatshark's side.

But not victorious enough to claim a sea predator, she couldn't quite be left behind Ochiba in hunting a Volcano Lizard. The trek was long and arduous, facing the heat and humidity of the jungles, but soon enough she came across her quarry. A long breath, just like she had practiced the very morning with Ochiba... and with a thunder, the beast was felled.

In all, a quite exciting and fulfilling day. And there was a rally to execute later...

Kotori was immediately put out by the day's event. You see, animals and Kotori never quite seemed to get along. Even the most placid fluff ball kitten seemed to turn uneasy in her presence. She may have liked the cuter variety of animals, but the reality was that they wanted nothing to do with her. So what better way to test the wrath of Chikushudo than hunting down scary animals who could kill you on a whim. Perfect plan for this fine afternoon.

And so it came as a great surprise that she not only managed to bag herself a Great shark, but come out unscathed! Rather than continue the hunt, she decided to give up and keep all her limbs intact.

Tetsu has a bone to pick with those great shark that he messed up bidding on. Does he know sailing? No, but he knows ship controls and that's the same thing right?

It turns out sonar and a bristling array of harpoon guns is the answer

The event is closed.

The Great Hunt came to a close and observers of the hunt were surprised to see many ships returning with carcasses of greatsharks! There's a sense of pervasive relief found on the island, especially among the fishing community, that the seas will be safe for a few weeks. As a side effect, the island finds itself bombarded with large quantities of greatshark specials on the menu everywhere, from high-class restaurants to lowly food stalls in Tenjin Town.

Approximately 17 Greatsharks were killed, 1 Jimen Tori killed, and 1 Jimen Tori was assaulted.

Kaiu Ryosei is declared the winner of the Great Hunt! He gets 9 Bid Points and +0.6 Glory total with 18 Hunt Points and 3 Greatsharks
