Silver Fin Productions has reserved the fine dining kitchens of the restaurant Granite in the Hanei Tower, and borrowed all of its cooking staff to recreate a semblance of an old show, "Jade Chef". Each participant will serve as the head chef, who will manage both the menu and the management of the kitchen to make their culinary creations before Yasuki Ayame, Yasuki Umiko, and many other judges. Within a short amount of time, the head chef is tasked with managing their staff to cook the best culinary dishes and earn the title of "Jade Chef" at the end of the competition. Pressures will be unbearable, and the stakes are high! The kitchen may become as hot as Jigoku itself, but only the most decorated Jade Chef will survive!
Magic: Magic is not allowed unless the character rolls contested Agility/Stealth (Spellcasting) against the crowd. Emphasis is needed to make the roll, and only spells that last at least for an hour can be employed. Needless to say, getting caught has consequences. Soshi Shugenja school technique can be used to bypass this restriction
Yes, Chef!
Each Head Chef and their staff will be given a total of 15 Time Units. Each Time Unit is allocated to an action during the course of the event, where the Head Chef assigns staff to their role to either fetch ingredients, prep, or prepare food. Head Chefs may have their staff work on food in large quantities or craft their dice pool to build towards something more complex, which presents both a risk and a reward. Once time units are spent, they are expended. Use them wisely!
In addition to each staff member serving the Head Chef, if the Head Chef has any Servants, they may have 1 of them involved in the event to grant an additional 1 Time Unit for a total of 16 Time Units maximum.
Please note that Raises cannot be called for this event, unless explicitly allowed for the action.
Please note that the Head Chefs will not be rolling themselves throughout the event.
Time Unit Actions
Each of these costs 1 Time Unit as an action. The goal is to earn the most amount of Cuisine Points by the end of the event.
Ingredients and Prepping
- Procure Fresh Ingredients: The kitchen comes fully stocked with ingredients in its pantry and fridges for the team to make anything they desire, but admittedly, they've been supplied by food services or kept on standby. If the head chef wishes to get fresh ingredients from the markets, farms, or fishers, they will have to assign someone to fetch them. This grants +2k0 to the next cooking action roll, and if the roll was a success, this grants an additional 1 Cuisine Point. Please note that this can be stacked and that all bonuses will be expended once a cooking action is completed. Also, remember that rolled dice can be a maximum of 10kX before each 2k0 after 10 is converted to a kept die of 0k1.
- Procure Wild Ingredients: While most kitchens made due with their stores or daily trips to the markets, an adventurous head chef may consider procuring ingredients from the jungles of Shiawase Island or perhaps utilize a lesser-known ingredient. This is a daring choice and is bound to turn heads with any dish made, but there are some risks involved, especially when it might make for an experimental dish with an acquired taste requirement. This grants a Luck reroll on the next cooking action roll, with the same dice pool as before. If the roll was a success, this grants an additional 1 Cuisine Point. Whether or not the Luck reroll is utilized or needed, it is considered expended after the cooking action roll. This can be stacked.
- Compliment with Alcohol: While a dish should be able to stand on its own merits, often alcohol or a beverage can add another aspect to the tapestry of the dish. This can either complement the meal to add a different palette, or perhaps the meal can be potentially based around a choice of alcohol. This grants +1k0 to the next cooking action roll, and it will be done as if it had an Emphasis bonus. If the roll is successful, it grants an additional 1 Cuisine Point. Please note that the bonus is expended after the cooking action roll is completed. This cannot be stacked.
- Kitchen Prep: This action can be either appointing the staff to a particular task, focusing on the preparation of ingredients, or taking to spend an extra bit of time on the meal so that it is cooked to perfection. This grants +0k1 to the next cooking action roll. This action is expended after the next cooking action roll and can be stacked.
- Rally Staff: Time is of the essence in this event, but some extra care in rallying the staff or evaluating their strengths and weaknesses can mean building a solid foundation. This grants +1k0 toward all cooking action rolls done in this event going forward from this action. This action can only be done three times for a maximum total of +3k0 granted.
- Simple Fare: Simple fare could be the preparation of an appetizer or a taste tantalizing before a larger dish. Nothing exactly groundbreaking when it comes to dishes, but often an easy crowd pleaser found in either fast food or a street food stand. Make a roll of Craft: Cooking/Agility using the dice pool of 5k2 with all bonuses procured with action points (if any), adding the Craft: Cooking skill of the head chef. This is done at TN15 and grants 1 Cuisine Point on success.
- Casual Plate: A casual plate is a dish found in an established restaurant or izakaya, requiring a bit more effort from the cooks. This can also represent the preparation of a classic dish or a component of a complete meal. Make a roll of Craft: Cooking/Agility using the dice pool of 5k2 with all bonuses procured with action points (if any), adding the Craft: Cooking skill of the head chef. This is done at TN20 and grants 2 Cuisine Points on success.
- Premium Dish: A more specialized dish that might be available at some restaurants, but it's a bit more prohibitive as it finds itself only served during holidays, special occasions, or merely when koku isn't an issue. Make a roll of Craft: Cooking/Agility using the dice pool of 5k2 with all bonuses procured with action points (if any), adding the Craft: Cooking skill of the head chef. This is done at TN25 and grants 4 Cuisine Points on success.
- Fine Dining: A truly exquisite dish is the special occasion itself, often associated with lords, champions or even Emperors. This dish is truly special and requires precise mastery to achieve; it can also be easily ruined if any shortcuts are taken. Make a roll of Craft: Cooking/Agility using the dice pool of 5k2 with all bonuses procured with action points (if any), adding the Craft: Cooking skill of the head chef. This is done at TN30 and grants 6 Cuisine Points on success. Additional Raises can be called here for an additional 1 Cuisine Point per successfully Called Raise, up to 5.
Once all head chefs are finished with their creations, they will be presented before the panel of judges and the local special guests. Given the large number of dishes that might be presented, they will only take turns and take one bite. However, the keen judges can be savvy enough to evaluate based on its composition and using their other senses as well. Ultimately, there can only be one Jade Chef and two runner-ups.
The head chef with the most amount of Cuisine Points will be granted the title of 'Jade Chef' and granted the Jade apron for their achievement, granting them 9 Bid Points and +0.7 Glory as they are broadcasted by the Silver Fin networks. The second-place head chef will be acknowledged with 7 Bid Points and +0.5 Glory, while the third-place head chef will be awarded 5 Bid Points and +0.3 Glory.
Ties are broken by the largest amount of Successful Called Raises and then by the largest number of successful cooked items. Finally, if further ties are needed, then it will be determined by the most remaining unspent Time Units.
