[Day 5 - Early Afternoon] Side Event: Fantasy Fight Tournament

Post by Boogiepop »

Fantasy Fight was a long-forgotten card game that found a popular resurgence in Unicorn space to a mainstream audience, which then later spread to the rest of the other Clans in a short amount of time. In this game, players play the role of a powerful shugenja or Fortune, utilizing their power to summon fantastical creatures and spells to battle one another for dominance. While the game had some quiet support in traditional cardboard, the virtual medium does allow for the game to be played from any terminal and even on some communicators that could support it. The game's popularity has also opened up the market for other card games to be introduced, trying to compete as an alternative or just a means of making a quick koku. Close variants have been released, such as 'Fantasy Flight', 'Final Fight', and 'Final Flight'. This has unfortunately diluted the brand of Fantasy Fight enough that the mistaken name could only be considered a small faux pas.

The most recently released set is the 'Chikushudo House x Fantasy Fight' collab set, an expansion that is based on the popular v-personality collective of 'Chikushudo House'. Based in Scorpion space, 'Chikushudo House' hosts a variety of characters with the likeness of kitsune, usagi, tanuki, and all other animal-based denizens of that realm. The brand has seen a creeping popularity outside of Scorpion space and secured itself with a collab expansion. In this expansion, it increased the power level of animal-based decks, while offering new game mechanics such as 'songs'.

This Final Fight Tournament is held in conjunction with Fan Con as its 'Day 2' event, although the limited amount of space and the popularity of the game have much of the convention clearing out the Hanei Tower so that it can properly facilitate all of its player attendance. Silver Fin Productions has set up crews on site, broadcasting select games from players at the top tables and that has secured some eyes on the network even outside of the Crab Clan.

This event will be closed 24 hours after it goes online to ensure that the Finals can be resolved in a timely manner. Once the thread is closed, Characters that passed the Qualifiers roll are set into brackets that will be seeded with NPCs accordingly.

Players who don't already possess a deck may buy one at 2 zeni to compete. Alternatively, they could buy a 'tournament-winning deck' at 2 bu and receive a +1 to all rolls using Games: Fantasy Fight/Intelligence and all rolls made in this event.

Magic: Magic is not allowed unless the character rolls contested Agility / Stealth (Spellcasting) against the crowds and officials. Emphasis is needed to make the roll, and only those spells that last at least an hour can be employed. Needless to say, getting caught has consequences. Soshi Shugenja school technique can be used to bypass this restriction.

Qualifiers
To qualify for the final brackets of the top tables, each player will have to face a number of opponents in what has been dubbed the 'grinders'. Players will be put in a pool with players of varying skills and will need to win games so that the best players can rise to the top final brackets. The game has grown substantially since its reintroduction, so much so that some Clans have been assigned designated 'Fantasy Fight Champions' to travel from tournament to tournament in Empire space. With continued interest in the games, it's likely the champions will grow in glory, and there might be more stakes to the game than just pride.

Players of the game may choose one of the following opponents as a highlight of the qualifier participation. This player will have their own rules, representing the sort of deck they are playing. If the player can defeat their chosen opponent, they advance to the Finals.

This portion of the event will close sooner to allow for the Finals portion to take place in a timely manner.

Opponent 1
Image
Kuni Sumie
"Ugh, I can't believe Fantasy Fight would sell out to Chikushudo House. This game is absolutely dead and unplayable. Anyway, good luck doing anything in this game."
Playing: Nari-chan Song Control Stacks
Highly Competitive - Kuni Sumie is playing a competitive deck at the top of the metagame, one that has admittedly seen top placement in multiple numbers, but she is only doing so ironically. The deck has proved itself problematic in the game, especially with the 'Nari-chan, enchanting kitsune' card being the lynchpin of a controlling set of songs that could be played almost indefinitely. Due to the contract with 'Chikushudo House', the Fantasy Fight rules committee has its hands tied on banning a card based on the collab partner's most popular v-personality.

To defeat Kuni Sumie, players make a Games: Fantasy Fight (Chikushudo House x Fantasy Fight)/Intelligence against a cumulative TN60 in 3 rolls. A cumulative TN is achieved with the sum of all rolls. However, Sumie's deck is equipped with powerful counters. If when keeping high, any of the rolls (after all bonuses applied) would be either the number 7, 14, 19 or 39, treat the result of that roll as being 0.

Opponent 2
Image
Doji Tomiko
Playing: Rainbow Chikushudo House Pile
"I love all the characters from Chikushudo House! I own every member in their full-art special variants, in Nebula foil!"
Not to be Underestimated - Doji Tamiko is playing a deck made up solely of cards from Chikushudo House with almost every v-personality character. The deck itself isn't competitive but each character played grants a bonus to each character to create an unstoppable force if unchecked!

Players against Doji Tamiko will need to make Games: Fantasy Fight (Chikushudo House x Fantasy Fight)/Intelligence skill checks against a total of TN45 with 3 tries. During each of these 3 rolls, the player may set their own TN but must pass a total of TN45 to defeat Doji Tamiko and pass the qualifiers.

Example: Players may set the first TN of their check to TN10. If they fail this roll, they are still required to pass a total of TN45. They may set their subsequent check to TN20 and TN25 to make up for this, as an example of a strategy moving forward.

Opponent 3
Image
Susumu Jouichirou
Playing: Nyoko-chan Secret Seduction
"I play 'Nyoko-chan Secret Seduction'! This allows me to search my deck for a song card and play it immediately! 'Nyoko-chan's Wares' says then I search for a song card, it deals 5 damage to you! And then you take 5 damage from any asset card, 'Nari-chan's bewilderment' will put three tokens into play, then trigger a special phase called..."
Combo Synergy - Susumu Jouichirou's deck is an elaborate mess of many triggers and cards that play off of each other, creating a complicated engine that will ensure that he wins the game.

Players against Susumu Jouichirou will need to make Games: Fantasy Fight (Chikushudo House x Fantasy Fight)/Intelligence skill checks against TN30 in order to pass the qualifiers. Prior to making this roll, players may make up to two skill rolls using Battle (Mass Combat)/Perception, Investigation (Notice)/Awareness, or Commerce (Mathematics)/Intelligence at TN15 to discern his strategy, manage their resources, and potentially eliminate key pieces from his strategy. On a successful roll, gain one Free Raise on the next Games: Fantasy Fight (Chikushudo House x Fantasy Fight)/Intelligence skill roll against Jouichirou with an additional Free Raise for each successful Called Raise.

Opponent 4
Image
Soshi Katsuro
Playing: Jump Scare Traps
"You fool, you've activated my Jump Scare trap!"
Traps within Traps - Soshi Katsuro's deck is seemingly mundane but contains several secrets that will see play at opportune times and might catch his opponent off guard. Slip up and he might claim a decisive victory!

Players against Soshi Katsuro make a skill check using the Fantasy Fight (Chikushudo House x Fantasy Fight)/Intelligence skill, surpassing TN15 or be eliminated. If the final roll is 19 or less, the player must then pass a roll using either Investigation (Notice)/Awareness or Defence/Intelligence at TN15. They must pass this roll or be eliminated from the Qualifiers. If the final roll is 20 to 24, the player must instead pass a roll using either Investigation (Notice)/Awareness or Defence/Intelligence at TN10 or be eliminated from the Qualifiers. If the roll is 25 or higher, nothing happens, and Soshi Katsuro is defeated.

Finals
Players who passed the Qualifiers roll are qualified to enter the Final bracket after a gruelling set of matches in the 'grinders'. They will now find themselves facing off against other hardened players who have made it this far. This will be played against other Player Character Fantasy Fight players, with some NPCs to fill in odd numbers if appropriate.

Each of the games is played as best of three using opposed Games: Fantasy Fight (Chikushudo House x Fantasy Fight)/Intelligence Rolls. NPCs are considered to be Status 1 Crab samurai for the purposes of Techniques and Advantages. If you are paired with a PC, please PM them to resolve your match. If you are paired with an NPC, please contact a GM to roll for the NPC.

Fantasy Fight Champion
There will be one sole player remaining after the conclusion of the Finals brackets, and they will be crowned the Fantasy Fight Nakahama City Champion! This will award them with a special edition full-art card in Realm foil of 'Nari-chan, Anxious Gamer', which is worth 10 koku in the open market. In addition, the winner will gain 0.7 Glory.

Fantasy Fight Nakahama City Champion's opponent will gain 0.4 Glory for their valiant efforts. They will be awarded with a special edition full-art card in regular foil of 'Nari-chan, Anxious Gamer', which is worth 5 koku in the open market.

Minions. Minions everywhere! How can someone with a control deck play against so many minions! Honestly, this expansion destroys so many playstyles.

As soon as she sits down on the table, she can see it. The loss coming straight ahead. In less than 10 minutes she stands up and bows to her opponent. "Well played, Soshi san. At least there was something interesting. You were not just a zoo keeper opening cages and sending animals outside. Good luck with the rest of the tournament."

The Bayushi leaves really disappointed by the turn of the match and the thrice cursed new expansion.

Yasuki Taraka

Deck: Mercenaries and Merchants
Style: Stalling until opponent runs out of resources
Strategy: M&M deploys mercenaries to the opponent's side of the board with ever increasing upkeep. When they go unpaid, they flip to the owner's side of the board. Merchants do not inflict damage, but instead thwart attacks until the mercenaries flip.

Taraka wasn't really here to win the tournament. Fantasy Flight was something she did when Player Station Plus needed an extra opponent in a tournament. Her deck was pretty gimmicky, neither Mercenaries nor Merchants were particular well valued cards. Who wanted to give their opponents extra forces? Who wanted to just stall? But it did well enough to typically see her through to being defeated in the finals. And it worked really well against opponents who played overly complex strategies.

And as it was a good day for her, she was going to be presented just such an opponent who bore the mon of the Spider.

She bowed, set out her abacus, and got her cards ready.

"Oh,, Nyoko-chan Secret Seduction?" I don't see that played too often around here." she admitted.

Jouichirou grinned, "You don't even know what's about to hit you!"

"You don't say?" she said, clicking a few beads on the abacus. "I calculate your odds of winning this match are.....exactly 0%"

Play progressed, with lots of Jouichiirous machinations falling through either because he wasn't supposed to have so many units with the mercenaries on his side, nor could he punish Taraka with her merchants.

"Hmmm, I do love a good engine, Susumu-san, but you have to realize the real problem with so many gears interlocking together is that things go off the rails when someone starts adding even more gears, faster than you can handle."

"I'm afraid your bill is due." she says as the spiraling upkeep costs leave an army of angry unpaid mercenaries tearing down his life points.

Post by Utaku Itsuka »

Itsuka hadn't really been in the Fantasy Fight scene for a while. Or rather... she's never *been been* in the scene. She always wanted to, got into the game a few times, but generally Kiki would complain about the latest collections a couple months after they tried to get into the game again, and she ended up switching to other hobbies instead.

That didn't mean she didn't get back to old habits now and then.

Remembering the previous day, she first had her eyes on Sumie - it'd be interesting to ask her a few things about the LARP community... but alas, she was too busy, and she ended up playing "Mr Jumpscare", Soshi Katsuro.

Without a particularly creative strategy in mind, she went in for a Fox Rush build - with a sprinkle of Chikushudo House, just because it seemed like it'd make sense.

The quick buildup of forest creatures was enough to keep Katsuro busy, and at some point she wondered if a relatively easy game meant she was falling right into one of his well-known traps.

... which is exactly what happened. The TRIPLE BEARJIMBO FINISH she'd included in the deck had been carrying her through the game, and right before she thought the Soshi would fall, a "Kinuran Spirit Furnace" buried it into a Desolation Area along with half of her table.

Luckily, a few of her critters were close enough to her 'Kitsune Biopharmaticals - Perfumes Division' for her to play an "Izumi's Secret", keeping them HYPERFOXED for a couple turns before going into the void. That was just enough to get her by!

Tetsu isn't what you'd call a master player. But he, well, plays and plays to win, and as he's been playing for the last year has some prize cards to round out the deck. So Doji Tomiko playing like it is the chance to show off her foils is vaguely insulting. So he mills her and all those pretty cards glimmer in the discard pile.

Kazushi sighs as he sees his first opponent - he'd rather not be reminded of the previous night's pointless theatrics, but here we are anyway...

...on the other hand, this might be a good way to get back at Sumie for her little "Forever Night" stunt, avenging his wasted time, so it might be worthwhile after all.

Kazushi's brought his own, custom-tuned deck to the table - "Phading Phantoms", which uses an illusion-based strategy to trick opponents into wasting cards countering Feints, with a few heavy-hitters mixed in to catch those who think they can go light against a threat. The centerpiece is the creepy The Wailing Yurei, Kichiyo, who allows him to shift his cards in play around, sacrificing smaller spirits to nullify big attacks and keeping his own offense clear of any obstacles.

He absolutely crushes her. Her much-vaunted counters are spent against Kazushi's Feints, and she has no defenses left to deal with his real attackers. In a play for the highlight reels, the game was decided by a brilliant array of Haunted Howler apparitions that concealed his real tactic, a Cast Into Shadow that removed Sumie's troublesome Nari-chan, Enchanting Kitsune from the game. Without the core of her control strategy, Sumie's deck crumbled against a slew of shifty spectres.

Kazushi can't help but smile a bit as the player of the late "Lady Beatorisu" leaves the table in frustration, feeling that he's managed to redeem himself, if only a little bit, after the previous day's disasters.

Post by Tamori Kanna »

Kanna was ready! She had her faithful Nesting Dragon Eggs-deck, ready to copy lots and lots of flying dragons! The deck had been succesful for her in previous tournaments, but this was a new meta with unknown opponents from lots of different clans.

"Oh, hello! I'm Tamori Kanna, and I hope we'll have a great game. I'm playing Nesting Dragon Eggs," she announced cheerfully to Sumie as she greeted the now-dead-leech-wraith. The cheer was not returned.

In the first round, Kanna was doing her best, but too cautious play didn't score her many points. Not enough dragons!

Second round, Kanna was well on her way to winning this, she was certain! The cards in her hands were almost perfect for a sequence of duplicating flying dragons and hatching more dragon eggs... but she got so excited her hands fumbled with the cards during a draw, sending her deck and hand flying in a mess. Judge ruled she would have to draw a random hand with as many cards as she had had originally, to prevent any cheating, which Kanna thought was a little sour but in the end fair! Not that she would ever cheat, but the judge and Sumie didn't know that! However, the new hand was not as great, and while it was a victory, it barely got across the finish line with few Victory Points.

LAST ROUND! Kanna was giving it her all, because she was certain if she put her mind to it, she could do it! Certainly! And... and... she lost? Wait, what happened? As she began losing the game, her mind was spacing out, even as she tried to concentrate. Noooooo.

In the end, Kanna congratulated her opponent. She was now out of the qualifier.

Haruhi purchased her cards and studied them. Oh! The animals were so cute.

And she got to play against a Doji, meeting another Crane here! She was excited to meet Doji Tomiko, and amazed by how beautiful her cards were. And how many of the cute animal cards she had collected.

"Oh! Look at those beautiful colors. Where did you get them? Which is your favorite? Ah, do you know the name of the artist who made that card?"

A brand new fan genuinely and eagerly asking the young Doji about her passion.

The cutest card in Haruhi's deck was badger. "How many birds did they make? Oh, you have the crane!" *sparkling eyes* She made a list of the Chikushudo bird cards for future collection.

A new addict, if a complete novice in how the cards all worked together.

But sometimes fortune favored an eager heart!

She was a gracious and somewhat stunned winner. And chatted more about the game with Doji-sama, just as long as the young woman would be glad to do so.

Ryosei had been a pretty long time fan of Fantasy Flight, his deck focused on enhancing one unit to make it impossible to deal with.

He sat down with the scorpion and Ryosei immediately identified his play style. So he loaded up his unit with protections and sent it in, the scorpions traps were basically useless. Ryosei breezed through qualifiers.

Sumiko decided to try fantasy flight, after having a deck gifted by a nice Firefly she met before that apparently was a top deck in previous events. It was described to her as 'all out kill', and would apparently win games in 3 turns!

...She sadly didn't have any knowledge of how to deal with control though, and the game didn't go well.

Kitsune Soratoshi allowed himself only so many disruptions and distractions from his important work, for the clan and himself, but Fantasy Fight was one of them. It was silly, he knew, but he also knew that an outlet for competitive energy and frustration was important, and if there was one thing that the young Fox loved to do, it was make over-engineered combo decks look ridiculous. Perhaps a function of his years training alongside the eminently practical Crab, but no matter, when he overheard the cocky Spider talking up his "Secret Seduction" deck, Soratoshi knew who he wanted to take down.

The Fortunes gave him his wish sooner than he could have expected, and it set the tone for his entire tournament experience. Promising, and then not so much...

Re: [Day 5 - Early Afternoon] Side Event: Fantasy Fight Tournament

Taraka bowed to her new opponent at Table 2. Well if she had to lose, at least it would be to a Crab.

Her first round her deck performed incredibly well. Cards came out in exactly the right order, and it seemed to catch her opponent a bit off guard, though he well might have been able to fight his way to supremacy.

However, she'd definitely lost the element of surprise. She was really struggling to get the right balance of merchants and mercenaries. Too many mercenaries she'd get overwhelmed with no way to stop them, too many merchants could stall for awhile, but without the mercenaries backing them all it was doing was stalling.

But hey, she qualified, not bad for a hobby that she spent little enough time and money on.

It wasn't a very good plan, unless Katsuo's true scheme was to give a boost to the higher-stationed Scorpion.

The Soshi's traps fare the same as Sumie's counters - they are wasted on Feints and Phantoms, as Kazushi's Kichiyo shifts lower-priority cards into the paths of the deadly snares, keeping his heavy hitters safe, including a Tsushimi, Ghastly Goryo that wipes Katsuo's board clean in a very costly round. As the Soshi begins frantically rebuilding, Kazushi forces his attackers through with a Pass Without Trace/Apparition's Apportation combo that seals the deal, burning Katsuo's last few traps and leaving him with little left to do but accept Kazushi's inevitable victory. To his credit, Kazushi doesn't keep him waiting long, bringing about a decisive end to the round only a turn later.

Fantasy Flight, Roll 1 vs. Soshi Katsuo | 5k3+1 ⇒ 23 (TN: 16) Success.
Fantasy Flight, Roll 2 vs. Soshi Katsuo | 5k3+1 ⇒ 21 (TN: 17) Success.
Fantasy Flight, Roll 3 vs. Soshi Katsuo | 5k3+1 ⇒ 20 (TN: 17) Unnecessary, but just done for flavor. Success anyway.

Kazushi is victorious!

It wasn't like Itsuka *understood* the Meta. She just liked fast swarm decks, and it seemed like a reasonable choice given what she could get her hands on before the tournament.

She looked at Sumie's deck, tried to understand its strengths... she had *some* ideas, but wasn't sure her Fox Pharma's cosmetic defence would protect her Villipendious Vulpines long enough, and at the same time prevent the Nari-Ghost clock mill from triggering.

Clearly not in the first game - Sumie kept Itsu's Pharma cards buried deep down in her deck, her woodland creatures kept falling, and she couldn't keep damage building fast enough to avoid the dreaded Nari-Chan Ghost mill.

The second game... somehow Itsuka and Sumie found out an unexpected interaction with a relatively obscure older Fox Rush card (the 'Fret-not-Fennec'), still valid for this rotation, which when discarded by triggered effects immediately reshuffled all discarded cards into the deck, with Fennec on top, and forced the opponent to immediately trigger another card on their table.

It just so happened that all Sumie had on the table were two Ghost Clocks. One triggered, Fret-not-Fennec nullified its effects and forced another Ghost Clock to activate, eventually triggering Fret-not-Fennec again, and...

A referee was eventually called.

During the third game, her Fox Rush actually came online again, now with the full, sweet power of a skulk of kit-and-cat moving in for the kill.

Now, with the infinite loop in the second game, the referees were deciding how things should go...

----------
D5 EA - Finals vs Kuni Sumie, Round 1! | 4k4 ⇒ 18
Loses to Sumie's 31, Sumie 1 - Itsuka 0

D5 EA - Finals vs Kuni Sumie, Round 2. VP for +1k1 | 5k5 ⇒ 23... is actually a draw!

D5 EA - Finals vs Kuni Sumie, Round 3. | 4k4 ⇒ 27 - wins vs Sumie's 16! So 1 x 1?

Rolling a final round here; if you'd rather just use the totals of the previous games, then Sumie wins (Sumie 70 x Itsuka 67).

D5 EA - Extra round vs Sumie! | 4k4 ⇒ 20

Another Crane, eh

"Best of luck Doji-san" Tetsu bows. He places down his deck and immediately tries to make the apparent beginner run through her deck. He knew from experience that if you were new to the game, players didn't carry countermeasures but who knew, maybe she'd surprise him.
