Fan Con is a universal fandom convention that is held once a year by each Clan. Given the convention's massive popularity over the years, they become highly sought after by many cities on many worlds, and it is possible to have many Fan Cons held throughout the year across the Empire. This year's Crab Clan Fan Con is heavily sponsored by the Green Carp Living Role Playing Society and focuses on gaming, but there is still a space dedicated to animated serial and renga fandom. It seems that, regardless of the Fan Con focus, it still doesn't stop people from cosplaying characters from Starlight Miko Crusaders in droves. The event is held in the Hanei Tower, giving the convention an upscale venue with a rather tactical intention to showcase the city to visitors in all of its glory
Magic: Yes, but all spells will need to have at least an hour duration to be used.
The Fan Con Rush
While Fan Con is a convention that takes place all day, this event captures what the attendees are able to cram during the convention's peak hours. As a result, attendees may select up to 3 Fan-Con highlights in which to participate. They may only participate in each highlight once unless it is tagged with (Repeatable).
Highlight: Cosplaying
Cosplaying was something that started as an unspoken rivalry between the Shosuro acting and Kakita artisan community, but since then, it's found its way across the Empire as a means of celebrating fandom by dressing up as a favourite fictional character. While there are still high-level competitions that exist on the stage, often with multiple artisans and shungenja on staff to support one cosplayer to replicate the best costume, everyday cosplaying is meant to be accessible. However, it still doesn't hurt to have a good cosplaying worth of attention.
If an attendee wishes to participate in cosplaying, they may make either a skill roll using Craft: Tailoring/Agility or a Craft: Armorsmithing/Intelligence roll at TN15. On success, the attendee receives 1 Fan Point and an additional 1 Fan Point per Called Raise. Alternatively, if the attendee wishes to buy their cosplay, whether from a wholesale intranet site such as Fish or a Wanatabe recreations, they may instead roll Commerce/Perception at TN15. The attendee 1 Fan Point per Called Raise only.
Highlight: Role-Playing Games (Repeatable)
While the Green Carp Living Role Playing Society has set up easily the largest city-wide venue for Edge of Darkness, there are still many other role-playing venues with several tables set up for traditional tabletop role-playing games. Each game will be headed by a game-master, and they will be running a variety of games, which will ultimately be a mixed bag of what the game may be ultimately about.
When signing up for this highlight, roll a 1d6 to randomly determine what is the climax of the game. If this is done multiple times as one of the three choices of the Fan Con Rush, this can be strung together to lengthy Role-Playing Game experience.
- In-Character Moment: The attendee is given a key moment in the game where they can best showcase their character's personality. It might be a moment where they have to talk their way out of trouble or perhaps a comical pause between other player characters. Roll Acting/Awareness at TN15, gain 1 Fan Point on success with an additional 1 Fan Point per Raise Called.
- Combat: The game is a crunchy combat scenario where the attendee's character must fight through either a dungeon or several enemies. The attendee may make up to three rolls using either a Weapon Skill/Agility or Reflexes (appropriate to the weapon skill of choice) or Spellcraft/Intelligence against a cumulative TN60. On success, the attendee receives 3 Fan Points.
- Sneaking Mission: The game revolves either a heist or another scenario where underhanded tactics are required to stealthily reach the objective. The attendee may roll either Stealth/Agility or Sleight of Hand/Agility at TN15. They gain 1 Fan Point on success with an additional 1 Fan Point per Raise Called.
- Jump Scare: The players of the game are either confronted by a fearsome monster or a cosmic horror from beyond reality. In order to endure it and survive it (optional), they must make a Fear check (and add appropriate Honour Rank) against TN15. If the player succeeds, they gain 3 Fan Points.
- Loot: Whether through clever choices or a surprise windfall, the player of the game is granted some epic loot, which can be either better gear for their character or perhaps just the perfect ending to their session. The player gains 4 Fan Points. The Role Playing Games highlight is no longer repeatable.
- Rocks fall...: Perhaps some bad rolls were made or the game master is very onery, but ultimately the game ends with the player's character dying permanently. The player gets nothing, and the Role Playing Games highlight is no longer repeatable.
Highlight: Merchant Area (Repeatable)
Many merchants from around the Empire gather at every Fan Con to seek fandom and gaming wares. Commerce has always been a big part of every Fan Con, but needless to say, this has been taken to the next level the convention finds itself situated in Yasuki territory. The merchants compete for space, and stalls are found on every level of the tower, and several shops are even forced to set up their tables in the elevator lobby. To the savvy Fan Con attendee, the merchant space is filled with overpriced goods, but there are some gems to be found in exclusive items and some rare finds.
Attendees do not need to use a Fan Con Highlight to purchase from the Merchant Area, but if they are looking for either exclusive or rare items (listed below), they will have to select this highlight as one of their three choices. When selecting this highlight, choose only one of the following to roll.
- Fan Con Exclusive Items: These are special or commemorative items that were made specifically for Fan Con Nakahama City that will be sold nowhere else. The Yasuki have honed their craft over the centuries to capitalize on exclusive merchandise by maximizing a combination of novelty and invoking endearment. To be able to purchase Exclusive Items from below, attendees will have to join a long line of others and maintain their cool. Make a skill check using Etiquette /Awareness at TN15. On success, the attendee is able to purchase from the Exclusive Item list. Furthermore, they also gain 1 Fan Point and an additional 1 Fan Point per Called Raise, regardless of purchase. On success, this option is no longer repeatable.
- Rare Items: While much of the goods available at Fan Con are priced opportunistically for the occasion, there are some rare finds that could be discovered here. Some merchants carry a massive backlog of items that eventually turn into collectables. In order to be able to purchase from the Rare Item list, attendees make an Investigation(Search)/Perception or Huntering/Perception skill check at TN15. On success, they may making purchases from the Rare Item list. They also earn 1 Fan Point and an additional 1 Fan Point per Called Raise, regardless of purchase. On success, this option is no longer repeatable.
Gumbai is an old-fashioned miniature wargame where players command large armies to fight against each other until victory is found. The game is traditionally historic in nature, drawing from the Empire's long history, to often players are recreating old battles but allowing their skill and luck to determine the winner. The community has been a bit divided since the game's creation a few years ago, spanning more editions than any role-playing game ever could, with camps of players who have their own interpretation of the spirit of the game. There are many who are staunch pseudo-historians, wanting to stick to strict timelines, units, and painting schemes. Then, some want to want to throw dice and wipe out units wholesale. The majority of the tournament will focus on the era of Rokugan where the militaries were modernizing with gaijin influence from the nation of Renaud.
To participate in Gumbai, participants must utilize their army to either defeat the opposing force. Players make a Battle(Mass Combat)/Perception or Games: Gumbai/Intelligence roll against a cumulative TN60 in 3 rolls to achieve an "Attrition Victory". Alternatively, they may attempt to achieve a total of 3 Called Raises in their rolls against TN15 to achieve an "Objective Victory". If any raises are called and successful, they will accumulate Called Raises towards the object and the cumulative rolls. If any raises are called and the roll fails, no raises are accumulated, and the roll does not count toward the cumulative TN, the play has fumbled in their tactical gambit, and the army is on the back foot. If the player manages to achieve either the cumulative TN or the 3 Called Raises within 3 rolls, they win and gain 3 Fan Points.
There will also be an ultimate winner in this highlight. Ties are broken by any player who achieves both an "Attrition Victory" and an "Objective Victory, and then the player who rolls the highest sum of all rolls. However, any rolls that failed in claiming Called Raises will not count towards this sum. The ultimate winner gains an additional Fan Point and +0.2 Glory.
Highlight: Volunteering
Given that this Fan Con is hosting a large number of guests, at the same time when Yasuki Ayame is attempting to find an investment partner, the organizers are a bit shorthanded and would welcome any volunteers. Volunteering can be a difficult job, and it can involve: managing heimen workers, dealing with samurai attendees, being asked many questions, and putting out proverbial fires. All volunteers will receive a special shirt with their volunteer status, as well as a letter of thanks from Yasuki Ayame, as well as an invitation to an after-party where they will be served local beer and soba sandwiches.
Any attendee who volunteers automatically gains 1 Fan Point. If any volunteer wishes to go above and beyond, they may either make a Sincerity(Honesty)/Awareness or a Divination/Intelligence roll at TN20 to guide other attendees around the convention. On success, they gain an additional 2 Fan Points. If any character has the Insensitive disadvantage, they must spend a Void to roll this option. Benten's Blessing applies here.
Highlight: Enigma Room Express
With the popularity of the enigma rooms around the Empire, such as Escape from the Tomb of Iuchiban, Fan Con has set up its own enigma room. The limited vertical space of the Hanei Tower makes it difficult to host a full-fledged enigma room with full special effects and has insted condensed it to a single player experience. The enigma room is Surviving the Shadowlands, which puts the player in the role of a sole surviving Hiruma scout who must make their return to the Wall.
Players of the game may make up to 5 rolls using either Hunting(Trailblazing)/Perception, Athletics (Throwing)/Strength, Lore: Shadowlands/Intelligence, Artisan: Ikebana/Awareness, or any Melee Weapon Skill/Agility at TN15. If they pass three skill rolls, they succeed in returning to the Wall. However, each skill can only be used once. In their roll, they may call 2 Raises and if successful, this reduces the requirement to two successful skill rolls. After 5 skill roll attempts, if the player cannot achieve the required successes, they are considered lost in the Shadowlands (by the game's narrative).
The amount of Fan Points earned is determined by the number of rolls made.
Completed in 2 Rolls: earn 5 Fan Points and +0.2 Glory
Completed in 3 Rolls: earn 4 Fan Points and +0.1 Glory
Completed in 4 Rolls: earn 3 Fan Points
Completed in 5 Rolls: earn 2 Fan Points
Are you a Fan?
There will be many volunteers and supervisors who will be keeping an eye on attendees of Fan Con. The most enthusiastic and zealous fan will be awarded the appropriate number of Fan Points! While it isn't a strict competition, the great Fan Con fan will be given property recognition for their efforts.
4-6 Fan Points: The attendee is granted a golden badge of honour to show off their attendance at the convention and their commitment to their fandom, earning them the title of 'Fan'. Additionally, the character gains +0.1 glory.
7+ Fan Points: The attendee is granted a chromatic bronze-orange badge of honour to show off their attendance at the convention and their commitment to their fandom, earning them the title of 'True Fan'. Additionally, the character gains +0.3 glory and the limited edition plushy of Fan Con Nakahama City, Wateru the Water Salamander!
Whether or not attendees select the Merchant Area highlight, they may still make Fan Con purchases. However, please note that certain items are locked and will require attendees to pass the Merchant Area highlight to have access.
