[Kakita Haruhi]

Haruhi made her way with Kitsune-san and the Detective to a safer edge of the jungle.

"Let's find a good spot for our picnic. I'm sure Detective is hungry from all this walking! And climbing."

"Do you know what beasts might be deeper in the jungle? It's probably good to help put some information together to help plan a deeper trip. Though perhaps that's a question for the locals."

[Kitsune Kiyoshi]

"The simple truth is that most animals will retreat deeper into the jungle as the land around it is developed. This is especially true if prey animals. And, where the prey goes, the predators will follow." He explained. "Every area of every planet is different and I haven't read much about the island. But, I'd imagine there are snakes and large lizards, probably great cats, and, perhaps wolves or other canines."

He frowned. "It's hard to say without seeing more, really. I could summon some and ask."

If the pair of samurai wanted birds, they definitely would get birds! They can be both seen and heard, here and there, flying from tree to tree.

Most notably, however, is a fairly sizeable group of the Jimen Tori, the large flightless birds, near the water's edge.

Haruhi gasped and started recording the Jimen Tori. Video and audio.

They were so big! Flightless. Hmmm... Would that be an issue for an avi-drone concept? Yasuki Reina definitely thought they might be good mascots for the region.

"Oh! I wonder what they sound like!"

She remembered his advice and took a very small step toward them. Slow. Gentle. Curious.

For now, Kiyoshi watched. He was interested in the Crane's methods. If she spooked the birds, he was fairly confident he could calm them.

Getting closer, they could hear that the birds were making a honking sort of noise, a bit more melodious than an old earth's goose, but not much.

There were perhaps two dozen of them in the group, honking at each other. And other things. The two closest to Haruhi cocked their heads, keeping an eye on her, but without very much concern.

Haruhi brought her audio and video recording equipment closer. She stopped a respectful distance away and began manually sketching in a sketchpad also.

She smiled at their honks. Okay, it wasn't lyrical, exactly, but it had a percussive quality. She could work with it. And there might be more complex songs for key moments like mating rituals. But that might be much much harder to capture.

As she sketched, she imagined two possibilities. A toy sized version, similar to the size of her songbirds. Or something larger? Life sized? Would that take multiple drones inside a frame?

She glanced back at Kitsune-san for guidance and approval.

He approached and looked over her sketching. "That's very good, Kakita-san. They are very interesting birds, don't you think?"

[Kakita Haruhi]

"They are! They seem very brave. And social. Big. But not flying."

"Can you tell which are female and which are male? I usually look for brighter color patterns in the male."

[Kitsune Kiyoshi]

"It's difficult to say from observation alone. The larger ones are likely female. The brighter plumage and louder cries often indicate males."

[Kakita Haruhi]

She looked for subtle differences. Her sketches captured what she thought were male vs female coloring.

"I am particularly interested in the range of sounds, and there can be differences there by gender also."

"It is a little hard to distinguish in this group which sound comes from each, but I can hear pitch variation. Some a little higher? A little more melodic? And ..."

A long listening pause. Listening. Recording.

"There! That little "kaw-kaw-kaw". It's from the ones with the slightly higher pitch and more dull coloring."

"Do you think you could get one of the female ones to come closer. A place a bit a part from the others so we can get very clean single bird audio?"

[Kitsune Kiyoshi]

He nodded and whispered to the air kami, while focusing on one of the female birds. Once, the kami had granted their blessing, he spoke to it.

"Excuse me, we'd like to speak with you, if you don't mind."

There was a brief pause. Then, the bird honked... or so Haruhi heard. Kiyoshi heard something rather different.



"Oh, dearie me! No, of course I don't mind! Bless you, what a nice young chick you are."

[Kakita Haruhi]

Haruhi looked delighted.

"Oh you are wonderful with birds, Kitsune-san!"

She continued to record all the variations in the bird's honking as the bird conversed with the Kitsune.

"My friend loves your voice and would like to hear you sing." He explained.

[Hatoful GM]

"Does she? I'd be happy to let her hear some more." The bird seemed quite agreeable.

She rose up higher, stretching her neck out. What was honking became more of a trumpeting sort of sound... again, Kiyoshi would hear something different.

"Lalalalalaaaaaaaaaaaa! Lalalalalaaaaaaaaaaa! Laaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!" She settled down, giving her tail and wings a little shake. "There, how's that?"

The male next to her honked, shaking his tail and wings as well. "Oh, do go on, dear." The female said cheerfully.

[Kakita Haruhi]

Haruhi smiled brightly, and clapped for the bird.

Oh this was wonderful! So much variety in the vocalizations. The trumpet-like quality. She could already begin to imagine how to orchestrate around it.

She grinned encouragingly at Kitsune-san.

"More! More! If she doesn't mind."

[Kitsune Kiyoshi]

"My friend wants to hear everything you can do." He smiled.

"Everything? My word." The female bird preened a bit. "I can do quite a bit, you know."

The male bird warbled at her. "Awww, that's sweet, dear." She warbled back.

She bobbed her head a few times, honking quietly. "Okay, well, if you want to hear everything... although I won't make my danger sound, oh no. I don't want to alarm everyone. Quite upsetting that would be, oh yes it would."

From there, she began to make a variety of sounds: honks, warbles, some gentle hissing, and a bit more of the trumpeting.

"Thsnk you." He bowed. "It is all quite beautiful."
