Day 1 LE(Expecting) Unicorn Prettied Up

[Shinjo Suh-Hyun]

Suh-Hyun had heard of a restaurant on the higher end of town, surely an establishment of fine dining and even finer dress codes. With that in mind she had chosen to were her semi-formal dress uniform. Stepping from the tax, she paused at the door and couldn’t shake the feeling something was strange.

The dining room went silent for a moment as a single figure passed the entrance. Most of the figure’s form was hidden beneath a silken midnight blue dress cape, the neck of which was clasped together with a small polished silver chain. Their eyes were hidden in shadows cast a similarly midnight blue brimmed hat. Like the cape, the hat appeared to be silk and a stark silvery cord circle the crown. One side of the hat was pinned up by a brilliant silver pin in the shape of the Unicorn mon, stylized in a field of stars. The front of the hat’s crown had a silvered badge of a star shooting upwards. The addition of a large white feather from inside the fold completed the look. Emerging from the folds of the cape came a single hand, gloved in white. The arm attached was in a fine and richly purple sleeve, it’s cuff wide and midnight blue with a silvered knot pattern running from the edge to nearly the elbow. Slowly the hand came up and grasped the crown of the hat, lifting it up and off the figure’s head. Brown eyes came into view as the hat was lowered past the figure’s face. Brown eyes highlighted by an expanding line of red growing from her cheeks.

Oh fuck. Oh fuck. I am way too overdressed for this. Shinjo Suh-Hyun kept her eyes forward and made a very slow pan of her head left and then right. Who makes a novelty restaurant about crabs?!

Perhaps effected by the waves of embarrassment radiating from the Unicorn, a staffer approached and pointed out they didn’t have a cloak room here…but would still be happy to hold the Shinjo’s coat and hat.

“Thank you,” Suh-Hyun’s voice was more monotone then she wanted. It was equally monotone when she thanked the staffer again as they retired with the gloves, hat, and cape. Of course with the cape gone, the full uniform was now visible. A pressed white shirt, pleated and with a high stiff collar, was visible beneath a richly purple short coat with midnight blue facings. A row of tiny medals clinked on her left breast and a shooting star pin rested on her right. Finishing the ensemble was a black bow tie and a wide midnight blue cumberbund. She was almost assuredly the best dressed person in any restaurant that had a gift shop.

She stiffly followed a waiter to a table, thankfully in the back and sunk into a menu.

There were perhaps other well dressed folk here, but best dressed? That assuredly went to none other. However, alone sad she would not sit as Honoka would approach from nearby. Having previously been sat in a table alone with her instruments of management- a communicator and computer. Honoka retired these instruments for the night.

"May I ask if you are alright? Shinjo-san?" she asks the woman with the softness of sincerity.

Suh-Hyun peaked at the new comer from behind the wall of an up held menu. "Fine. I'm fine. Just a little surprised at the atmosphere of the restaurant here."

"Are you one of the wait staff? If you are worried your team did anything wrong then don't. Just a small misunderstanding on my part." The flimsy card stock wall stayed up for now, given the crustacean fixation here one might think of a hermit crab peering warily from its shell.

Someone who didn't know who she was. That was a rare occurrence in her life, and not because she was someone of fame but the sheer necessity of her staying within her some of influence was essential. Now? Well, she supposed that this kind of interaction was a touch more refreshing than most. She might even grow to like this kind of thing.

"Would you be willing to say what was so surprising?" she asked, her curiosity welling. "I hadn't thought to assume someone might have done something wrong, but if something is surprising that is something I would most like to know."

"Ah well...it's just I had expected one of those real high dollar restaurants." She laughs nervously, "The kind that toss you out if you show up in anything less then well." Suh-Hyun lowers the menu long enough to give the Crab a look at her second fanciest uniform. While it, like all uniforms, told a story about what the Navy thought of it's wearer that was concealed behind the esoteric knowledge of Unicorn Navy Uniform Regulations 422nd Edition. The tiny medals were cute though.

And the menu was back up, "I mean don't get me wrong this isn't some fast food, in and out, joint. Actually, it's kinda hard to pin down what level of dress is appropriate here." Another nervous laugh. "It's not everyday someone walks into a place so strongly, themed around a particular food item and the animal that produces it."

"Hmm," she intones a thought. Placing a hand underneath her chin. "I suppose I hadn't considered the dress code of potential customers when organizing the space. As you see my employee's are well dressed, of course," she says with a slight smile," but to place expectation on my customers... well, I would not want anyone to be without the opportunity to enjoy the bounty provided by crabs!"

There was a touch of excitement hanging in her voice after that last statement but she pulls herself back in.

"I should, I admit, apologize for not introducing myself earlier Shinjo-san. As well I suspect I may know who you are, as I have had time to prepare myself, I do not believe you have been given such opportunity. I am Yasuki Honoka, and this is my restaurant. As well, of course, I have other far more important connections but-- well I suppose that is the one worthy of note for the moment," she says with a sheepish, if not embarrassed, smile.

"Oh...ah...my apologies Yasuki-sama," Suh-Hyun sat down the menu and made a seated bow, "Shinjo Suh-Hyun, 2nd Testing and Evaluation Squadron, Unicorn Navy. If you were wanting to confirm information." She made an awkward laugh, "I didn't mean to disparage your restaurant in any way. The fault is mine for not doing more due diligence." Despite a desire to rebuild her little menu wall, the Shinjo leaves it down. No point being rude.

"I...um...do have to ask, given the entrees. The appetizers. The second courses." She smiles nervously, "All your desserts are just various sweets shaped like crabs, aren't they?"

"Not all-" she says, and then struggles to decide whether or not it would be appropriate to just show, with her hands, on the menu. However, erring on the side of caution always she lets her hands rest as she merely drives focus toward the menu.

"There are some desserts of a kind that have made use of crab! With all the different connections and developments we have made over time it was only a matter of trying eventually," she said with a soft smile. "Crab is quite the versatile creature. Maybe it might not be a dessert that many would immediately consider a dessert, like a pastry, but they have been used in sweet dishes!"

Suh-Hyun blinked at that reply. She supposed that it was taking the idea of crab cakes literally. Regardless while adventurous, the Shinjo was not quite willing to eat crab, crab, crab with a side of crab and crab dessert. So just a meal it would be.

"I see, umm might I ask for a recommendation for just a meal then? Something not messy since, well," She looks down at her uniform, "I mean if that is okay Yasuki-sama, I can wait and ask the server." At least she wasn't moving to hold a menu between them anymore.

"I would be delighted, Shinjo-san," she says with a pleasant smile, allowing herself into the seat opposite Sun-Hyun for the moment. Picking up this side of the tables device she slides through the appropriate menus.

"Now.. not everything here contains crab, but you can see what does or doesn't by if the name has a little crab icon next to it.. you see, like on here," she says, shifting her device around to show off what she was looking at. A cute little simple crab icon resting right after the name of a dish.

"Now, we have a whole sub list of items here.. the Crust-aceans, which are pretty much just bread bowls but I like them quite a lot. Maybe one of those might appeal to you?"

"Crust-aceans?" Suh-Hyun let out a small chuckle at that, "Sure I'll try one of those." Her self-consciousness at her dress was fading a little. Which let her regain enough boldness to ask, "So...I get why crab, but why so much crab? I mean your restaurant certainly shows the versatility of the crustacean, but focusing so much on on ingredient?"

She glances around, "And all the decorations. It just, well, seems there might be a story there?"

Honoka, stirred into the moment of having made a good suggestion offers happily far more than she might otherwise consider proper, "Crab are very versatile creatures! They are, well, from which my clan originally gained our name and time among the stars has only proven how apt that association has been. Among all these many planets we have ventured do you know how many have contained crab? Or, at least, as close as one might be able to expect considering the wildly different climates we have ventured? Far more than you would think! Despite the variation potential in evolution on differing worlds crab pop up everywhere. Their structures seem inherently enviable. This coupled with the versatility of the creature in their application as food or other goods is quite the awe inspiring thing, wouldn't you agree?"

"I hadn't really thought about it that way." She chuckled nervously at the sudden deluge. "Oh. But I did have family on the Ide II, perhaps I will ask them if they saw crab like beings on the expedition."

Suh-Hyun handed off her menu, "Do you want to stay and eat with me Yasuki-sama? I don't mean to take up your time but I have been wanting to get local opinions on the Governor's initiative to bring in new business."

Honoka took a quick look around her restaurant, sizing up the affairs of the night. Well, not really. Really she was looking to glance over to her work station without Suh-Hyun catching wise. There was just so much more work that needed to be done but--

Glancing down at her plush, Crabbo, who ever hangs by her side she remembers that she hasn't eaten dinner yet has she? That simply won't do.

"I would be very glad to, Shinjo-san. Actually, I have wanted to hear from you as well. As to what advantages the Unicorn might bring to our little island," she says with a soft smile, and settles into the seat opposite.

"I wish I could give you a good overview of the Unicorn's offerings," Her embarrassment returned, "I was expecting to be assisting an Ide or Iuchi, sadly none arrived. That's why I have been trying to visit the locals first. The way I see it you folks live here so I would rather like to help you find something that is good for you." She sighs, "Ideally the Unicorn could provide it but even without that, I would like to leave a good impression on you."

"Having said that Utaku Itsuka is one of my clan mates that has setup a business here, offering guided tours and chartered travel by boat or air." She smiled, "You may be already familiar with her."

Honoka didn't like to show it, and luckily she was good at avoiding detection. However, perhaps someone who was much more familiar with Honoka might have detected a hint of frustration? Ever more subtly, however, would be the evidence of her choosing herself for feeling such an emotion. After all, none of this mental journey could have placed blame at the feet of the woman before her.

Direction, "I am already certain you will continue to leave an excellent first impression Shinjo-san," she says, quite honestly. "Now. I must admit I have not yet had the pleasure of meeting Utaku Itsuka but I am as familiar as one can be from reading alone. Of course, that may happen in time and I hope it does."

"However, as for now, I do believe you had questions for me about my home? I do not know I could give you such a broad view as you might better get from the governor herself, but I could certainly answer what pointed questions you might have."

"Well I suppose I would like to know what sort of partnerships would boost your business? And you feel would be, for lack of a better term, a good neighbor." She smiled more genuinely now. No longer focusing on her clothing being out of place had put the Unicorn at ease.

"And perhaps equally as important what do you not want?"

"Shiawase Island is a hub of what can be for the local provinces, a destination spot for the rest of Green Carp. With the help of any clan, with their specialty wares, we could see quite a boon to our little island. We have little needs we can not get on our own, and now seek that which we might gain when we begin looking outward," she says, speaking the words with a prepared practice.

"At least, that is my understanding of our governor, Yasuki Ayame's, goal. Thus if you are going to make a proper pitch to the governor, I would suggest making one that shows off what you uniquely might bring to the table. What is it you can provide that no other can. Novelty," she ends with a small smile.

"Personally not much," Suh-Hyun leans back and crosses her arms in thought, "Well in the commercial arena. However, one thing the Shinjo at least are famous for are our love of speed. Have you considered organizing something akin to a rally race? It's not the sort of permanent investment I feel your Governor is after, but in terms of drawing more interest to your island..."

"A event like that certainly would generate a lot of interest, for a time," she says, with a soft smile. Thinking of a dear friend in that moment. "However, I do think that we will need something that we will be able to hold onto. We don't need a display, but something of merit for people to sink their teeth into."

"But, I should be going. I shouldn't sit here musing with you all day, Shinjo-san. As pleasant as it has been."
