[Day 5 - Early Afternoon] Side Event: Fantasy Fight Tournament

There was a quiet that set into the crowd as the game ended in a tie! With how the game was designed, that was indeed a very rare thing to happen. After some whisperings between the judge and how best to proceed, it was eventually deemed it was best determined with one more game of Fantasy Fight for sudden death.

Sumie would roll her eyes at the extra hassle she had to endure as a "professional" gamer. Here she was hoping to grab some over-priced karaage chicken for lunch! "Ugh, lame!"

With that determined, she would shuffle up and face against Itsuka once more. Fox versus Foxes! Unfortunately, she was on the play here and managed to set up sooner than Itsuka's fox-themed deck. She would play the lynch of her deck, Nari-chan, and have a well-timed counter when she would be expectedly targeted for removal. It would eventually end in a decisive victory for Sumie, allowing her to proceed to the next round without a break in between!

Taraka bowed to her new opponent at Table 2. Well if she had to lose, at least it would be to a Crab.

Her first round her deck performed incredibly well. Cards came out in exactly the right order, and it seemed to catch her opponent a bit off guard, though he well might have been able to fight his way to supremacy.

However, she'd definitely lost the element of surprise. She was really struggling to get the right balance of merchants and mercenaries. Too many mercenaries she'd get overwhelmed with no way to stop them, too many merchants could stall for awhile, but without the mercenaries backing them all it was doing was stalling.

But hey, she qualified, not bad for a hobby that she spent little enough time and money on.

Ryosei bowed respectfully to his opponent and smiled as he sat across from her. "Yasuki-san, I wasn't aware you were into Fantasy Flight, hope we have good matches."

And good matches they were. Game one both decks were firing on all cylinders. Play and counter play, a couple of crucial decisions meant that he came out on top. Few things could hold up to a fully loaded mercenary.

Game 2 went a little sideways. Ryosei struggled to find the right enhancements to load up his unit. Honestly the difference in this match really felt like it came from deck construction. Taraka still had some budget cards in her deck while Ryosei was running a meta deck with only a couple of pet cards. But whether from koku or luck or skill he managed to jam in the last few points and secure the win.

"Best of luck Doji-san" Tetsu bows. He places down his deck and immediately tries to make the apparent beginner run through her deck. He knew from experience that if you were new to the game, players didn't carry countermeasures but who knew, maybe she'd surprise him.

Haruhi arrived and took a seat opposite Kaiu Tetsu. She was dressed in Crane blues, with long white hair softly braided back. She was flanked by three extremely realistic songbird avi-drones - a warbler, a flycatcher, and a robin.

"Hello! So nice to meet you. You made the diorama of Nakahama city with the mini functioning power grid, right? So interesting! Have you played fantasy flight a long time? I'm just getting started. The Chikusodo animals are so cute! Have you collected a bunch of them? Which one is your favorite? I'm hoping to collect some more! Particularly the birds!"

"I just bought my 2nd deck." A better deck. Hoping to find more animal cards.

But she had no idea how to merge the cards from the two decks. She ended up with a mix less useful than either standalone deck.

"Oh, of course." Tetsu replies blithely. "Kuni-san, I'm a Kaiu. I'm a Fundai. You go for style points after you win it all"

The words turn prophetic. After a good first round, the second game grinds with Sumie taking it in a nailbiter.

Then Sumi gets all the style points

Kazushi bows respectfully to Ryosei as he takes his seat at the top table. Finally, he thinks, a player that's going to test me.

The Scorpion starts strong, hurling wave after wave of phantoms into the Crab's enhanced defenders, only to have them vanish with Feints as he rearranges them with Kichiyo to ensure that his forces come out on top. He's putting everything he has into these games, determined to prove - to himself, primarily, but to the other players and the audience as well - that he's got what it takes. Whether that will be enough to get him past the most skilled opponent he's probably ever seen is yet to be determined...

Ryosei bowed respectfully back "You are the second Scorpion I will have faced today, hopefully you do not rely so much on tricks and traps."

They shuffled up and game 1 was a pitched match but ultimately the phantoms and feints were too much for him. He nodded "I see it now." Was all he said going into the rest of the set.

Ryosei really sat down and focused his turns taking almost max time as he walked through each step in his mind thinking each phase and possible trick. He closed the holes in his defenses. Where phantoms once found purchase they were met with cold hard steel.

As the last round ended he let out a long breath "well fought Bayushi-san I have not had such a pitched match in sometimes. You are the first person today to take a game off me." It was genuine praise and probably not the conceited statement it would sound like from some. The Crab carried himself with humility even in victory. "If you want after the tournament I can show you a few places to shore up your play."

The finals! Even someone like Sumie was surprised she managed to get this far, especially when her day started with a few losses, but thanks to some convoluted tie breakers and technicalities, she managed to squeak in the Finals. Even though she was running a cookie-cutter and very competitive meta deck, she was only doing so ironically! This actually made her the dark horse of the event! A dark and mysterious spoiler who struck from the shadows and showed these nerds a thing or two on how to play the game!

"That's right!" She would tell herself out loud.

Lameness alert! Lameness alert! Mega lame Crab opponent!

But wait, if he was the Black Sheep, what would that make her?! The mainstream and 'regular' Crab?

No, no, no! Wait, wait, wait!

This admittedly caused some tilt in Sumie as she played to show who was the best Crab. No, the worst Crab!

Edgy angst

Sumi may have had some internal edgelord crisis but Ryosei was focused on just one thing. His deck wasn't perfectly meta but it was well designed and those design decisions shined today.

Game one Sumi barely even put up a fight. His deck gave him the right cards for a swift turn four victory. His loaded up berserker demolish Sumi's strategy.

Game two was an actual match, it seemed the other crab had locked in. There was play and counter play, an ebb and flow to the match. Ryosei had to analyse every shift in the board state and calculate all possible lines of play before each decision. Sumi almost had him, he was on his last leg until he top decked the perfect answer. He held his breath waiting for a response but then it went through and he won the finals!

Ryosei stood and bowed to Sumi "That last game was one for the ages Kuni-san. You're a great player. I hope we can rematch in the future." He said sincerely.

"Uggggh," Sumie groaned with a big roll of her eyes, so dramatically big that her eyes might have rolled out of her skull.

So it seemed like she lost to the Black Sheep after all! She could already picture it...All the Crab Clan surrounding him in cheer and picking him up on their shoulders. Everything is forgiven and he's accepted into the fold as a functioning member of Crab Clan society!

Of course, this was only possible because in her personal reasoning: He's a try-hard. This is so lame!

"Whatevs..." She conceded (not that she had a choice) to the superior player.

At least, she could bestow herself the title of Worst Crab!
