Ochiba waits patiently (or rather, Ochiba patiently, where she bounces up and down slightly while Kanna applies the mask) she looks in the mirror and starts chuckling.
"Hehehe! Glad the crew can't see me now. Thank you mermaid-san, I haven't pampered myself like this in a while...lots of other pampering, but not actually like this."

She slides a door open and politely gestures for the Dragon and the mighty hound to go first.
Deadpan"Now you've given me a facial, do you think we could use one another's chosen names?"

"They would think you look adorable, absolutely," she teases happily, figuring that Ochiba probably wanted to look tougher to her crew. So a ferocious mask would be better for that next time!

With masks in place, she smiles happily as Ochiba opens the door for her and they go out to the pool. Kaida drags his plush-bed after them, so he can repeat the process of looking for the perfect spot.

It seems the double-entendre whooshes right past Kanna though. "I don't think I'd call just a mask a facial though, but sure! You can call me Kanna, and I can call you Ochiba! We're friends, right?"

"Oh, sorry Kaida-san, let me grab that for you."
Ochiba helps Kaida carry his bed...considerably more polite to the dog than she was to people.

"Well, I do have a great face, it's true."
She follows Kaida's lead as to where he'd want the bed delivered for him to then work on getting comfy.

"Uhh, yeah I guess we kinda are friends?"
She cocks her head for a moment as if only just processing that.
"Huh, cool. Yeah, happy to be your friend Kanna-san, and more than happy to be the Ochiba in that relationship."

With a relaxed sigh she starts making her way into the water.
"Fukurokujin's hairy b-...balance beams that's hot. Phew, right out of the earth."

Kanna giggles. "When I see how you're with Kaida, I think you should consider getting a small dog like him too." Though that made her picture Ochiba in a dramatic pirate-outfit, holding a miniature poodle in her hand and a lightning-gun in the other, singing bawdy shanties on an old-fashioned ship.

Kaida taps around a bit on his little legs, until he finds a spot where he wants his bed, where he proceeds to tap around in circles. Big eyes look up expectingly at Ochiba and the tail of course is wagging.

In contrast to Ochiba, she breathes in the familiar air and odor of a natural onsen. "Oh wow... I didn't think they'd have a real volcanic hot spring here, but they do! I guess I should've figured that out since they have an active volcano." She doesn't waste any time getting in.

"Okay, just a little bit because then I have to purify my hands again, mmmhm? So your belly better be worth it."
Ochiba leans out of the pool and starts spoiling Kaida while considering the question.

"Huh, you reckon? No room on a ship but once I settle."
Looking down at the dog and ruffling behind his ears.
"Maybe it would be nice to have someone who's always happy to see me. How'd you wind up with Kaida-san anyway?"

Kaida is indeed very happy to get some rubs on his magnificently floofy belly while he even gets to lounge in his bed!

"He was a gift, along with some of his siblings," Kanna shares happily as she sinks into the water, and doesn't mind sharing Kaida with Ochiba now since Kaida did love other humans fawning on him too, "From some distant family that visited Rokugan, and they brought back some native animals. And we got three puppies; mom has Kaida's sister - Mimi - and my brother has his brother - Akira. They're all so adorable when they get together."

Kanna speaks with fondness as she mentions her family, and their dogs, clearly having a pretty decent family relationship.

Once she's properly de-dogged Ochiba returns to the waters, only grumbling a little about the heat before she finds a ledge and starts acclimatizing.
"Busy parents, huh? Can see why they needed pets to keep everyone else occupied. But you guys sound close, was it...nice having all those siblings?"

"Ma and pa are often busy, yeah. They have a lot of responsibilities." Maybe being short and fit made her denser somehow. "It's very nice to have lots of siblings though! We always look forward to spending time together when we get the chance, since everyone's adult now and have duties that take us to different places. I can't imagine being an only child, it sounds very lonely."

Kanna on the other hand was sinking very happily down into the water, keeping her head barely above water as it rested on a ledge. "What about you, Ochiba-san? Do you have siblings? Or are you close with your family?"

"I just had a rough time of it growing up and I dunno, once I started getting old I just never saw eye to eye with my folks on anything. They're not bad we're just real different."
She gestures with a hand and ends up sending a spray of water out into the pool.

"They wanted me to play it safe and get along with people, do my duty and all that stuff. But that was never really what I wanted. I guess given where they came from it makes sense."

"They uhhh-" Looking both embarrassed and annoyed. "-were ronin, so grew up outside of a clan, worked their asses off to get into the Mantis after years of service and all the shit jobs. For them getting ahead meant keeping their heads down and doing whatever needed doing, no questions asked."

Huffing some air out of her lips.
"So obviously, in the dojo with the other kids, that was awkward."

“Hells yeah! You know I tried that actually, but I wasn’t as good at fighting then as I am now. So I got beaten up a lot. Then I figured you can suck up to people and they’ll leave you alone.”

Ochiba’s eyes narrow slightly
“But I promised myself that soon as I graduated that wasn’t going to be me. I wasn’t going to take it from anyone… so uhh the navy was awkward.”

Still visibly unhappy at the memories
“Some still give me shit over it. But folks on the ship are a bit more understanding. Most of us are or were screwups at some point. Nobody really cares who your parents were if you’re good at your job.”

Regaining some of her usual humour
“And I am very good at my job.”

“So privateers are ships that go and…capture other ships, and their stuff. Sort of like pirates? But instead of being pirates they work directly for their clan. Sort of like being in the navy unofficially?”

Pause
“So I’m the first mate or XO, which is sort of the person who runs the ship so the captain can focus on big picture stuff…” hesitantly “and that ship is a privateer.”

Well, she had imagined Ochiba a bit like a pirate queen, but...

"But, but... you're not a pirate, right? Pirates are mean and kill people!" Kanna sat up straighter now.
