Haruhi had arranged with her patron to use a computer in one of her guest rooms for some research.

Yasuki Reina-sama was interested in the jimen tori and potentially incorporating them as a mascot of Nakahama. Haruhi was hard at work translating her research so far into jimen tori avi-drone schematics. Research that might yield more information about them, or a habitat in which they might be particularly thrive was relevant to her commissioned project.

She had invited Susumu Sumiko to help. A chance to hang out, regardless of what they could find.

It was late morning, so she had tea at the ready also.

She was reviewing her notes as she awaited her friend. Secret place. Freshwater lake? Hidden somehow? Hard for a flightless bird to find. Check folktales and legends of the area? Look for maps? Look for historical and local news stories - keywords: lake, pool, fish, jimen tori, birds...

Sumiko had made her way to the agreed meeting place. Thankful the weather looked somewhat calm, although she wished it wasn't quite so humid. Deciding turning up at a Crabs home in full Spider kimonos would perhaps cause more problems she instead dressed more casually and more neutrally.

After checking the route she quickly fond her way there, noticing the lovely Kakita girl waiting for her and with a smile approached.

"Good morning Kakita-sama! I hope you're well this morning?" She bowed

Haruhi smiled at her.

"I'm so glad you could come. This is quite a day with our trip later, the con, the LARP tonight. Have you thought about what you are going to do? I must both pick a clan and a costume! A delightful challenge."

"I imagine our computer research techniques might be different. Shall be both give it our best go, and then compare notes?"

"I'm always happy to help" Sumiko offered with a smile "and I've planned out something very simple for the fan convention. It's more just a wig and an outfit than a real new outfit, I think I'm going to volunteer to help others. I remember how much volunteers were able to help in previous ones I went to, and I want to give back to others. I look forward to seeing what you create!"

There was a nod.

"Shall we go and see what we can find then? Is your patron ok with me using their computer?"

"Yes, it's fine for you to use your computer. Go ahead. She knows the topics we are searching on - it's all public stuff. Just potentially buried in a sea of potentially relevant posts and articles."

"That's good of you to volunteer. It really is an important role. I thought maybe I'd put together my costume for the LARP and then wear it to the con. Maybe a famous character from an old movie? And then the character likes to dress as the same character from the movie? But with teeth? And for very dramatic reasons? I don't really have her background and motivation worked out yet, but it will be fun to figure out! Maybe like ... oh ...like she was a movie actress? And they were filming on set in some gaijin castle and fiction and reality collided."

"Combining the LARP and the con is a clever way to approach two events. Having the teeth in during the day and then adding hints of blood on the tips of the false teeth and maybe the corners of your lips to have a hint of perhaps having a snack before the evening" there was a small laugh as she loaded up the computer to begin research.

"Vampire princess might suit you, I think you could be an alluring princess."

Sumiko was very clearly extremely good with computers, she knew how to search and dig through, and how to cross-reference search to get to information hidden in a sea of noise.

There's a lot to be found in different categories.

The jimen tori are sometimes seen ascending the mountains. For Mount Jinsei, they live for a time in the caldera at the top, and then come back down. For Mount Nakahama, though, they would be seen going up and never coming back down. It is believed that the blessed birds ascended to the heavens. Alternatively, they suicidally jumped into the lava.

With raises, these patterns are more or less confirmed by ecologists, although the birds haven't been seen to go up or down Mount Nakahama for some time.

Testing of the ecosystem at Mount Jinsei shows that it is a fine, but unexceptional site for jimen tori nesting.

Much of Mount Nakahama has been secured and charted, but not all of it. It is known to have a largely unmapped cave system. There is reportedly water somewhere in there, but it hasn't been definitively found.

Kitsuki-san showed me some great shops for this kind of thing when we were putting together our outfits for a party last night. It was pretty crazy. The magistrates came! I didn't get a chance to talk to everyone, and a lot of folks were masked. Did you go?"

"Oh wow! You found so much!"

"Do you think the ones going up Mount Nakahama and disappearing were actually going into the cave network to a hidden nest there? That might be a good thing to investigate."

-Jimen tori will apparently eat any fish that's given to them, so long as they can vaguely swallow it. If it's too big for them to swallow, cut it in half, and they'll eat that! They're pretty food motivated

"I did hear about the party but I didn't attend. If magistrates turned up I think I made the right choice, I'm not sure I'd want to deal with Crab magistrates without any good reason. If you want any assistance with the outfit also let me know, I have a little bit of knowledge in how to make it look far more realistic."

There was a thoughtful pause as she studied the information.

"Hmm...this would certainly imply nesting in the past that has stopped which is an unusual change in animal habits usually associated with environmental changes. There's also a chance they got confused with the two mountains, especially with certain birds not returning when going up the still active volcano. An unmapped caving system...with water in there potentially. I wonder if it has something to do with the work done around the mountainside such as the hotel? Let's see if I can find anything? However Mount Jinsei does have a very large lake with it that has many fish from my understand, perhaps we should check that out later instead of Nakahama."

Is there a timeframe for when they stopped going up and down the mountain, and does it correspond with the building of the hotel and/or the building of the walkways?)

Let's say about a year after building the walkways the numbers travelling up the mountain dropped considerably. Some are still seen up there from time to time but in much smaller numbers.
