Day 2 LM (Magistrate's Office): It's the popo!

[Moto Shiwahime]

Shiwahime's engine roared down friendship street, passing the shops, restaurants and embassies until she got sight of a large building that fit the description of her query.

She was not chased down by a spirit, which was good, but that just meant that the thing that'll crash her vacation this time is of another nature.

Time to take the bull by the horns then! Time to offer her services to the local law enforcement!

She pulled up to their offices and went to the front desk

''Mornin' mate! I'm Moto Shiwahime and I'd like to offer my services while I am here...who do I have to talk to?''

While the island had grown over time since its founding and the Crab expanded from Friendship Street, the magistrate's office had stayed in the same place. It was a modest building with only two floors. Even though the administration and enforcement work has grown over the years, the building had not, cramming everything into its space with a combination of efficiency and stubbornness to the best of their abilities.

The Moto would be let through the gates and greeted by a stammering heimen-doshin at first before a Kuni yoriki took notice and approached her.

"Good morning, Moto-san," she said with a nod. "I'm Kuni Ayaka, yoriki here. You can start by talking to me. Can you clarify on your intention here?"

''Well met and good morning to you as well Kuni-sama! I am Moto Shiwahime.'' The large Moto bowed to the crab, fierce smile on her face.

''I am on vacation here for the moment but I don't know how to rest properly and something always happens anyway. So, I am here to introduce myself and offer my help should it be needed.''

She raised a hand as if to preempt protest

''I know you know how to do your job and do it well but I just wanted to offer. I'm a doshin myself and I admit I am curious to see how the Crab Clan does things here. Might be I could learn from you guys''

Kuni Ayaka

Ayaka nodded slowly to the Moto's words, her expression looking visibly guarded and skeptical at the moment. It was made even more obvious by her answer. "If you're on vacation, seems very strange to be wanting to work. There's some sort of conference that's going on at the moment, isn't there? Are you part of that, or is this a legitimate vacation?"

There was an obvious distaste for the last word, as if she thought samurai who did such things were the worst.

Shiwahime shrugged at the question

''I would like to know myself Kuni-sama. Every once in a blue moon my boss tells me to go get a vacation somewhere and pretty much forces me to go. The places he sends me to are always nice but there is always something important happening there and I usually get involved in various ways in a myriad of other things.''

She spoke as if she was stupefied by her own statement

''I think he uses vacationing as a pretext to send me in situations where I either need to adapt or learn how to recover from falling on my face. Last time he sent me on vacation there were big political weddings and a serial killer on the loose.''

Kuni Ayaka

"Yeah," Ayaka nodded slowly at first and pointed at a heimen to come over to do some recording. "Would you mind leaving a character testimony at our office? I'm sure it'll help your chances with something around here."

A uniformed heimen assistant quickly scurried over with a computer and started typing out every word from Ayaka.

"Right off the top...So, you're saying that your boss forces you on vacations to various nice places. For you to learn or stumble into trouble. Do you typically get entangled in trouble? What's this about a wedding and a serial killer? Did you find this serial killer? Did you stop this person?"

''Sure..but there are some details I can't give cuz I either don't have them or don't want to falsely speculate"

She gave some though about the Kuni's questions

''I always find trouble because it's my duty. I am a doshin for the unicorn and often act as a manhunter. Hunting down assholes and bringing them back to serve justice is my bread and butter and I am pretty good at it too. I'm just not not the best for courtly or political bull...stuff...''

''...like on New Kalani. A wedding between a mantis and a crane...and a mantis and a spider. Dunno what I was expected to do there but I lent my support to insure the safety of my fellow unicorns. Mostly against whatever horseshit the Spider decided to dredge.'' she had no problem talking ill of the Spider clan after all that happened

''And yeah, we caught the serial killer. There where three of us: a crane and a lion magistrate plus myself. The fight was hard though...the serial killer ended up being a humanoid hammerhead shark thing the size of an ogre. Fucker bit my arm off but that just ended up pissing me off more then anything. I got a dope Kaiu arm to replace it too."

She showed the cyberarm more clearly

''The thing was called the Habscom Slasher''

"So I see," she said as she offered a glance at the recorder's computer screen to see that everything was documented regarding the Moto, the job description, and the adventure. "Some interesting insight into your life and duties. You make it seem almost glorifying if anything, but I'm not so sure if we have the sort of manhunting you're used to around here. At least, with non-Kuni expertise. A magistrate's office isn't only about busting down criminals and keeping an eye on taint. We've been busy mostly dealing with..."

She paused for a moment to be more delicate with her words. "...people around the island are trying to get their bearings. Some are lost in their direction, suffering from some by-law infractions, and we have some routine inspection work too, on a nautical level. There's been a massive boom in sudden yacht renters that's gotten out of hand."

Shiwahime smiled warmly. She knew what the magistrature dealt with and she knew her work was niche. Still, a wildcard could be useful.

"I understand Kuni-sama. I don't intent to impose myself but if I could bring something up concerning the Habscom Slasher is that we managed to find it despite the Yoritomo magistrature having spent days, if not weeks, looking into it. That was not so because we were better then them...it was because the locals had refused to talk to them but were surprisingly more open with us."

She paused

"Having a collaborator unknown from the general populace could be an asset in gleaning insights. I'm a blunt instrument for sure but that can also be an avantage. With the ongoing bidding contest and my vacation...I have a lot of reason to be in a lot of disparate places or adopt odd behavior patterns."

Kuni Ayaka

"So, you're offering a friendlier face here," she said with a tinge of skeptical inflection in her tone. "You know, Moto-san, I was hoping that you would jump immediately at the opportunity to do some yacht inspections for us to truly lighten the workload, but a wandering Moto informant is not what I expected entirely."

As the two talked, a Kuni man dressed in a suit that looked like it had been lived in for a day meandered through the hall casually with a Golden Shell bag in hand, keeping a few reheatable food items. He hummed to himself casually before noticing the interaction going on.

"Kuni Ayaka-san?" He questioned simply, the question enough to ask 'what's going on here?' or 'is there an issue?'.

"Just a visitor, Kuni-sama, I have this," Ayaka would say regarding the situation.

Seemingly unbothered by that answer, the Kuni man would shrug and continue on by, seemingly given enough reason not to involve himself in the situation.

Shiwahime gave a polite bow to the man but did not press the issue. She respected the work of the magistrature well enough.

''If you want me to inspect yachts...I'll do it.'' she replied to the Kuni afterwards ''I simply did not want to presume.''

Kuni Ayaka

Ayaka kept quiet until her superior walked down the hall and turned the corner, leaving the two to return to the conversation without another intrusion. She gave a momentary glance behind her before looking back at the Moto. "I wish I could, especially when that's partially host responsibility, Moto-san. Some of our guests may get their feelings misunderstood and potentially get offended by our inspection. It requires a delicate hand, not one that just barges in to find trouble."

"How about you go..." She said as she looked around, her gaze potentially going to the floor as if she could scrouge out something. "Why don't you just go to Tenjin Town and look around there? Rumours of some gathering. I'm sure it was just a late-night fish drop off by fishermen in black at the end of the day."

Shiwahime hung back and smiled to herself

''Sure. I'll do it. Thanks for humoring me Kuni-sama.''

She was not dense enough to not get the impression she was being sent on a fool's errand but...why not? No skin off her back if nothing happened and if something happens then she'll just prove what she can do.

She hoped for the later since a good shot of adrenaline is always welcome.

''Now...I think I should go, yeah?''

Kuni Ayaka

"Hah?" Ayaka said at first with surprise, wondering if the Moto was expecting anything else. This wasn't a place to chat shop, and this particular Kuni wasn't exactly into that either. "No, Moto-san. I've got half a dozen things to get to. You got something to do, right? Nothing else here. Let us know if you find anything."

With that, she strolled off without any further formalities.

The heimen finished typing in a frenzy (must be an educated one!) and then quickly made themselves scarce afterwards.

Without an active conversation, the sounds of office murmurings, ringing communicators, and typing seemed to find themselves on the forefront of noise once again.

I'm always up for a good time lady

With that she made her exit
