The morning starts off with some cloud cover that only temporarily delays the appearance of a warm sun to greet the day. Some forecasted showers in Nakahama City never come to fruition, and much of the island enjoys a very sunny day with lovely, clear blue skies. The day is hot, but when compared to yesterday, the heat is much more manageable.

Many people get the idea to hit the beaches to make up for the last few days, but will likely find out that many others have the same idea. Nishi Beach finds itself packed to capacity, and even Azuma Beach sees some interest. Daylight just seems to stretch with the pleasant day, and many businesses see a good number of customers even in the evening as the warmth lingers with a great abundance of good spirits found in the locals.

Kisha takes the dish to the judges, uncovers it, and pours the sake to accompany the expertly sliced and plated "special deepfish array, fish still alive in the morning rain and carrying hints of that rain, a subtle glazing of coconut and ginger, and the deep umami that only comes from the bottoms of the fair Tango seas, set against the dry sharpness of the Tsujimaki Six-Seven junmai daiginjo.

Sorato doesn't know a ton about tricky cooking techniques, but he has been scouting the farms and wet markets of Shiawase Island for days and has a pretty good idea about what's in season. He gives his staff a shopping list with detailed notes for each course--and appropriate drink pairings, of course. Yuzu-scented, slightly sweet sake matches the appetizer platter of braised and chilled tropical vegetables, perfect for cutting the muggy heat; a light sake accompanies the clear seafood broth with delicate shellfish and local water spinach, and a more robust brew pairs with the lightly-grilled filet of Tango Tuna quick-marinated in a sauce using miso produced by a traditional-style maker just outside Tenjin Town.

It's probably too much to ask of this crew on short notice. Any part of it could go horribly wrong. But none of it does. Sorato's team of chefs has definitely earned the right to finish all those open bottles afterward, and he'll happily throw in a few more full ones too.

Senshu steps into the kitchen arena like a general entering a battlefield. She's calm, immaculate and with absolutely no intention of letting chaos get the better of her. The chefs line up before her. She surveys them with that precise, feline confidence of hers and begins issuing commands that sound suspiciously like poetry but somehow translate into immediate obedience.

Two assistants are sent sprinting for fresh ingredients. One to procure the sharpest, freshest sea bream the market can offer and the other to bring back pristine clams and a bottle of junmai daiginjo that smells like delicate flowers and expensive trouble. Senshu herself rolls up the sleeves of her shirt. Just enough to suggest she means business, not enough to cause a scandal, and begins orchestrating every movement in the kitchen like a conductor with a team of very frightened violins.

She lifts the shellfish as if appraising gemstones and murmurs instructions while the chefs chop, simmer, and sweat. A pour of alcohol here, a quick seasoning adjustment there. The scent of sake mingling with the offerings of the ocean fills the room.

Mount Nakahama

The magistrate's office would quickly respond to the rescue of Tamori Kanna, Hiruma Akiro, and Kaiu Nagisa, by sending a few squads of doshin with yoriki to surround the area where they were previously held.

It turned out to be an old abandoned sawmill that had probably seen some use during the early days of the island's founding and had long shut down after the construction of Hotel Nakahama had stopped. The yoriki and doshin had some difficulties navigating through the compound at first. Kaiu Takeo had littered the area with traps in the situation that his victims found another way out or dared to skirt the rules of his 'game'. It was surprising that the Kaiu was able to accomplish all of this, but given that he commanded his local wilderness patrol squad loosely, it gave him ample opportunity to make a hideout where he could build his traps in his spare time. It also ensured that none of the locals would ever discover his compound of death and despair.

Takeo's first victims were eta that people who cared little about before moving on to heimen, and finally to his intended targets in samurai. He had perfected his craft before his transfer to Shiawase Island. The magistrates would later discover that he had ambitious plans to target the governor and the karo, but chose to settle for easier-to-capture samurai to sate his bloodthirsty agenda. Hiruma Akiro wised up to the Kaiu's plans earlier on, which forced Takeo's hand to kidnap him.

However, his reign of terror had come to an end with his death. This was likely going to be a case that the locals would study for quite some time...


Kuni Ayaka

Kuni Ayaka let out a yawn as she stood watch to supervise the procedural work that remained for the magistrate's office. There was the discovery of Yasuki Kaito's body that had to be brought back to the city, leaving the difficult job to Kuni Junpei to deliver the gruesome news to the governor and karo. That wasn't going to earn him any points. It was going to be dawn soon, and they had barely scratched the surface of what had happened.

Bzzzzt...

A call buzzed on her personal communicator, and she picked up the line. "Ayaka here. I'm doing work, right now. Over at the sawmill. Yeah. Yeah. No, everything is still the same around here."

There was a long pause as she listened before she answered the conversation. "No, he still doesn't know. I'll keep an eye on the office. Okay. We'll keep in touch."

She hung up.
