Local Fauna and Flora

Tango Tuna
First discovered at the same time as the island's founding, Tango Tuna are a breed of fish that flourish in great numbers in the oceans surrounding the Tango provinces. Despite their name, their migration path includes much of the neighbouring island provinces and the western ocean. This breed of fish is especially large, averaging around 15 feet in length, and some catches have been reported to be more than twice the average size. The tuna gather in large schools and feed on smaller schools of fish and crustaceans.

Tango Tuna is prized for its distinct buttery taste, and it finds its way in demand for various cuisines of the Empire, making it one of the major exports from the Green Carp. Its thick meat holds up surprisingly well during transport, but local connoisseurs will likely be able to tell the difference between preserved and fresh cuts.

Diamond Shrimp
Diamond Shrimp are common crustaceans on the Green Carp, and they can be found in great numbers in the seas surrounding the Tango Province. They share only a few similarities with common shrimp, possessing front scythe-like appendages similar to those of mantis shrimp that they use defensively. They are typically found as solitary creatures, but congregate during breeding cycles to find mates. Their name mostly comes from their young, who appear to be clear with a near shimmering shell. When they grow to adulthood, their shells harden to an opaque deep brown, but this can differ based on their diet and territory.

The crustaceans are both caught and farmed by the heimen of the Tango Province islands. They are a common staple of local cuisine, such as ebiyaki, dim sum, and tempura. Young diamond shrimp are truly favoured as a delicacy in large amounts, both for their appearance and flavour, and fetch a high price tag on the mainland. Only recently have local merchants considered raising prices to match this trend.

Greatsharks
Further from the coast waters, the greatsharks of the Green Carp often claim the seas as the apex predator. They are massive in size, enough that they can be a threat to boats and small ships. As a result, fishing boats never dare to stray too far from established areas without an escort or tracking equipment. Even with proper precautions, some greatsharks have been wily enough to avoid detection and stalk ships through deeper waters before striking. They are thankfully solitary creatures, as they are often very territorial, although pairs of greatsharks have been documented. Despite the Green Carp having large oceans, they are one of the reasons why air travel is preferred over travel by sea.

Jimen Tori
The jimen tori is an endemic fowl found only on Shiawase Island. They are a stout and flightless bird that favour roaming wilderness close to the shores, and sometimes in the water. Often, they are seen in flocks roaming the green spaces close to the beach with a semblance of a community. They are omnivores, feasting on local fish and fruits as their primary diet. Sometimes they will flock over to farms and become a temporary bane to crops. The males are identified by their multi-coloured plumes, while the females typically are more plain by comparison. By reputation, they are known for their mild temperament and a become one of the many mascots to represent the island for their lackadaisical nature.

They are sometimes hunted by the heimen, but this is discouraged by local sentiment, given that they become endeared creatures. While the birds might seem fearless around people, even when approached, they are known to retaliate if any signs of threat are shown. They have been reported to go for the knees or ankles and cause embarrassing injuries.

Volcano Lizard
Volcano Lizards can be found roaming around Mount Nakahama, but their close cousins can also be found on other islands. They favour the steam vents and sulphur banks from the dormant volcano, earning their name based on their habitat. They have been shown surprising heat resistance, even being able to dive into boiling water for some duration. While volcano lizards are conservative with their energy, they can be aggressive as they consider anything to be a food source or a claim to their territory. The lizards can fight each other to the death, and some have been caught for underground fights.

They are especially poisonous; their saliva can affect the respiratory system. One bite can be enough to be fatal to any other animal, and the lizards often scavenge the remains later. This poison can be just as dangerous to humans without treatment, and their jaws are capable of causing mortal wounds. Chance encounters with the lizards are rare, and most deadly cases are from visitors who have foolishly wandered deep in the jungles looking for the lizards or adventure.

"Jigoku Flower"
A large multitude of carnivorous plants exist on the Green Carp, and many have yet to be catalogued or studied fully. The most infamous of these plants on Shiawase Island has been dubbed by locals as the 'Jigoku Flower", although that's not its official name. A tall pink flower that moves with near-sentient fluidity and is quite reminiscent of documented plant life found in some clearings of the ancestral Shadowlands. It is large enough to claim lone jimen tori and elderly volcano lizards without much of a fight, using its whip-like apedanges.

Jigoku flowers can only grow in a very specific climate with demanding heat and moisture, which gives them a home only in the deep jungles of Shiawase Island. As a result, any encounters with the plant are few and far between, which aids in maintaining its reputation as something of nightmares or legends.
