I'm fine with that, haha! Foundations of ideas are built on another set of foundations? Credit is where credit is due, Mindshred/MS did provide the basis of these daily game 'events' in the first place with Hollow Throne. Many games built a top of that with their own spins and ideas. Banner is just one of them!

And I recall Burning Jewel, a Legend of the Burning Sands game did first the Influence/Bid roll mechanic, which has been a big staple since then for most appropriate games.

Granted, it was daily when we were still so young and reckless....

Heh that was tired player eyes seeing the bolded number and thinking it was the base. I probably wouldn't take Cursed by Jigoku on a character so very unlikely to ever be in a combat. It feels like cheating for free points.

I can see that perspective, and I don't disagree. But I also think it could be leaned into...and one never does know when the Horde will emerge again...

I did ask the GMs ahead of time it was ok to take Bad Fortune (Secret Enemy), making sure it wouldn't be extra work for them but also that it wouldn't just be free points on my sheet. I had taken it on one character in the past, and over two games nothing happened at all (despite me being more active in those games than in this ^^; ), so I wanted to give it another go.

I am so happy it worked out well and was a crazy event that included other folks!

Disadvs like Secret Enemy and Secret Love can be really really interesting but they can also be a lot of work. I've had some uh...very scary uses of those disadvs in previous games I did like how it was used here though

My sworn enemy didn't show up at banner, but I didn't take it for free points, it was for crafting the backstory I wanted. I'll admit it was not someone who was going to show up easily. It was not "nearest person who can immediately ruin my life." But they could have shown up and if they found me it was going to be very very bloody. And when a future Banner game rolls in where I can reprise Hato without tone them down, the gm's will have had years to prepare the bloodbath XD

It is really important to at least define boundaries with players for sworn enemy stuff. When a player had an enemy at Sapphire I asked her about her boundaries, and she gave me, "No SA please" My kneejerk reaction was, "Isn't that a given?" followed swiftly by "It's the internet, of course that's not a given." The Kakita Artisan who terrorized the proceedings with fart paintings and Kakita Artisan tech delighted her, and brought out some really tense drama in the player that was bitter betrothed to them. Tying players together by bonding their disadvantages together, efficient!

I was more angling at disadvantages deliberately taken to be easily avoided in game.

Like here, I could easily have made my Phobia 3 be bears or big cats . . . but no, I saw island based with lots of water and fishing . . . and DELIBERATELY took Phobia Sharks and Large Fish.

And then the fishing Event turned up . . . that was no accident that I was first in with my post. That event made my disad for me.

Most of my disadvantages (compulsion: speed, fascination: bikes, infamous) have been used and rped. I'm very happy for it! Saddly low pain threshold cannot easily come up for a courtier.

My disadvantages didn't end up coming up mechanically but damn if I didn't lean hard into them being part of Ichitaiyo's narrative and description. Part of me wishes that somebody had taken the time to bully Ichitaiyo for being a Black Sheep.
