Since some PMs have been sent about this, I will post here.

If you recruit Crab peasants to dig this out, they'll have it dug out D10. There may be drawbacks to this.

If players would like to dig it out themselves, a cumulative TN of 200 Athletics/Strength (1/timeslot) or Commune/Earth (by spell slots) will excavate the tunnel.

"I don't. An earth kami might remember."

"We may need more people to dig this out. I'm glad to help, but ... I am not the best person for that. I'm ... I'm not sure how many we would need. I can think of some samurai I've met here who look strong."

"Has anyone met a shugenja here? I suppose the local Yasuki might be able to direct us to someone."

[Kitsune Kiyoshi]

"I can talk to them. I don't have any incantations that would encourage them to move out of the way. I might be able to summon a burrowing animal spirit, but I'm not sure what would be appropriate."

[Susumu Sumiko]

The ever sensible Spider shook her head.

"Remember while we're helping the animals, this is still Crab land and this is still a volcano that isn't dead Kakita-sama. I'm not sure we can just go on a recruitment drive to recruit people to dig into a Crab mountain without speaking with the hosts as well as anyone monitoring the volcano itself."

[Kakita Haruhi]

"Speaking to an earth kami might tell us what happened here, at least. Who moved the earth. That will be good to know if we need to speak to the Crab authorities."

[Kitsune Kiyoshi]

The Kitsune knelt beside the dirt pile with his densai, and began a low chant.

A spirit (of sorts) appeared.

"Unnng." It greeted the shugenja.

[Kitsune Kiyoshi]

"Hello, my friend." Kiyoshi kept his voice low and spoke slowly. "Why did the earth from above fall to wher it is now?"

He patted the dirt mound.

"Ungh." There was a pause. Then a longer one.

"The hands of man worked above." It said. "I did not like it, so I moved."

[Kitsune Kiyoshi]

"I wish to know what lies below, beyond the space the fallen earth filled. Is it water, fire, or something else?" He asked.

[Hatoful GM]

"There is some of every element." It said. "But little fire. The fire is that way." It pointed deeper into the mountain, and then sunk back down into the, well, earth.



"The Special Place is not lava." The jimen tori spirit put in.

[Kitsune Kiyoshi]

"The Crab construction disturbed the earth and caused it to fall." Kiyoshi explained to the others. "As our friend says, there is no lava below, no fire."

[Agasha Sorato]

Sorato plays his flashlight over the cave ceiling above the debris pile, then pokes the loose dirt with his booted foot. "It should do no harm to move this, then. No guarantee another area won't fall in later, but nothing's permanent in volcanic geology."

[Kakita Haruhi]

"What a cute earth elemental! I hope he is happy and comfortable in whatever new place he has found to rest."

"It sounds like digging above disturbed the earth. Which raises an important question. If we dig to open the space, which the jimen tori would need to reach their secret place, do we risk causing earth to fall - in the process - into the space below? There is no way to avoid it, using manual digging, to my knowledge. But it could muddy a freshwater pool. Or crush a jimen tori below."

"Maybe a shugenja's method of moving earth alone could magically prevent that."

"Maybe there is a way to engineer it safely, to minimize any dirt falling down. As much as possible in a pile up here?"

Yes, it's not too hard, TN15 so long as you supervise the work. TN20 to make plans that others can follow.

[Kakita Haruhi]

"I think I could help with that. I should be around to assist when it's done, if we go the route of manual earth removal. But let's figure out what to do next. Should we ask permission? Should we look for a shugenja? Should we recruit some strong helpers?"

[Kitsune Kiyoshi]

"Yes." Kkyoshi said. "Without the support of the Crab, whatever we do here may not matter. More construction could just blindly seal off the Soecial Place again, or destroy it completely."

[Susumu Sumiko]

Sumiko nodded to Kiyoshi.

"Exactly so. I want to help the jimen tori too but it needs to be done the right way. We should reach out to the governor."

There was a small pause before she added "perhaps not myself or Kitsune-sama though."

[Kakita Haruhi]

"I could ask her. Perhaps with your advice about what would be best to say?"

"She seems very interested in media that draws attention to Nakahama. My patron had suggested making the jimen tori something of a mascot. Perhaps if we offered to record the investigation into the space? Like ... like an unboxing episode? A hidden wonder? Something beautiful to be preserved but ... like with avi-drones ... made accessible to others through technology? A ... trail cam perhaps, viewable from the hotel? Watch but do not disturb?"
