Sumiko studied the route ahead of them as well.
"It looks like I should fit in fine" there was a small chuckle

"The Special Place is where the happy water thrives, and life thrives within it." The spirit said. "When its time is done, it flows out to the sea, and when we are ready, we follow it." It bobbed its head. "But while we can leave that way, we cannot use it to return. And so now, there is a way out, but no way in."

Do we need to move things to go inside, or just clamber over?
(you need to move something, but it's just a simple barrier easily moved by someone. Sumiko can probably just duck slightly and go under it)

Sorato is not the Most Mighty of Men, but he
is capable of casting basic Water spells with ease, which by the logic of elemental physick means that he's plenty strong enough to shove one end of the construction barrier aside and make room for the group to enter.
He's the only one of them who might have to duck down in there... nevertheless, if no one objects, he'll shoulder his way in.

Haruhi had been taken it all in, expression thoughtful.
"We need to assess several things. Is this safe for us to explore? Is it safe for the jimen tori to return? Is whatever made the place special still intact? Happy water? Full of fish?"
"Only one path to find out."
She followed Agasha-san into the cave. Flashlight on!

Sumiko had gone in slightly ahead, being the smallest one of the lot. Her Conelantern shining ahead of her. She didn't move quickly, taking more careful steps so that they didn't risk walking into trouble.

Haruhi glanced down, pointing her flashlight to the cave floor. Was there any sign anyone else had been here recently? Human or animal prints?
(Not that she was the best to observe such things. But she looked. Just in case.)

It wasn't long before the rather narrow passageway that the party of samurai took joined a larger passage. There were other passages leading back outside, but the spirit led them deeper.
And then, it wasn't far from there where it opened to a mid-sized chamber. It was humid, with water gathering on the rocks. There were a few jimen tori there, squawking in mild surprise as the group led by the spirit entered, then subsided with warbles.
And there was a bit pile of dirt and debris.
"The Earth spirits moved here." It said. "Beneath is the way, but it is blocked now."

Haruhi looked with interest at the jimen tori. Did they look content and well fed?
She took some audio and video of them, and offered them some fish.
She looked curiously at Kitsune-san. What had he learned from the spirit. There didn't seem to be a way forward that she could detect.

"I guess this is the way" Sumiko commented quietly as she noticed the birds "wonder what happened then. Human made collapse or volcano? Hopefully not the second one or there may be lava in our future."

Moving not-too-quickly so as not to alarm the flock of birds, Sorato crosses to the pile of debris for a closer look. He picks up a handful of dirt, examines the shape of the pile and the angle of scattered rocks. What probably happened here? Is a passageway blocked, or a pool filled in?
Unfortunately his forensic dirt-insights are not of the sharpest today. Maybe someone else in the group will prove a better observer.

With a pleased warble, the jimen tori accept the fish. They're good sharers, at least among the small groups they're in.
It seems that this location is a good one to hide and make nests in; there are a few visible, of the ground variety. But there's no real sign of food; they must venture elsewhere to feed.

At this point, the exact history can't be seen without speaking with earth kami. However, it looks like
something dislodged a great deal of loose earth, sending it into this tunnel below.
It doesn't look like there is more loose earth to dislodge. If it was somehow cleared, it would probably be safe.
Getting heavy equipment in here doesn't really seem possible. It's probably a pretty good amount of hand work or earth kami work.

Haruhi explained to the others what she had realized. "Something dislodged a great deal of loose earth, sending it into this tunnel below."
"Anyone keen with the earth kami?"
