Volunteering to help a child make their first set of sales? This should be an interesting experience, both for himself and his charge. Looking around the group for who might need help, he has a little interview with each of the children until he finds one of the youngest, just barely eight. The little boys face was drawn tightly, perhaps a bit thin. His clothes were nice, but they were clearly not in the current style. Perhaps his family was a bit down on their luck. Crouching down to his level, Hikari smiled and offered him a hand after looking to his nametag.

"It is nice to meet you, Ichiro-san. I am Asako Hikari, but you can call me ojisan if you want." He lifts a hand to lightly touch on the mon of his haori, a finger tracing over each of the symbols. "I am from the Phoenix Clan, but I'm sure you could recognize that..but if you look here at this symbol of the open hand...this means that I trained with the Ide, from the Unicorn. I have been many places, but now I am here to help you, because Yasuki Umiko-sama said that you might need someone to help you with selling some things."

The little boy gave a slow nod and held up a small sack of items. Some old, but well made wooden toys that were obviously well loved, as well as a collection of coins of various ancient denominations. "These are my treasures, ojisan. My mama and papa said that when I go to school, I can't take them. I'll be too big for toys and the coins I have to get are new koku so our lord bosslady has lotsa money."

This brings a chuckle out of Hikari who nods. "It can be hard, leaving things that we know behind. But it looks like you loved these things very much. When I had to leave things behind when I left to learn from the Unicorn, I gave them to people who I thought might be able to use them. That way, even though I was gone, they knew that I wasn't leaving them behind, I was just introducing them to new friends."

Ichiro smiled a bit and nodded. "Are you good at selling stuff, ojisan?" Hikari chuckled. "I hope so, Ichiro-san, or otherwise /my/ lord bossman is going to be cross with me. But, let's go set up so we can get a good spot before everyone else, eh?" And with that, he scoops up the slight child and places him on his shoulders, carrying the little Crab out into the space proper, decorum be damned.

-----

"First, Ichiro-san, we should look for other people who have things to sell. I have an idea for how we should set up our little booth. You have nice things, but we can always use more. Let's see what we can find...ah, like this here," he says, picking up a few small trinkets on a good deal, mostly shiny baubles, but a few cast steel toys and a nice lacquered chopstick set in a magnetically sealed box. "One important thing to learn about when making sales of all sorts: never lie about your product. If you lie and someone finds out, then they tell other people, who tell other people, and then all of a sudden you have no more customers. No one wants to be lied to unless they are a very odd customer." Ichiro nodded a bit, seeming to understand this simple point. They wandered about the market a bit more, getting a few more odds and ends before Hikari slipped his charge a few coins to pay and off they went over to the stall.

"Hm. This won't do. We need something a bit more...attractive...to draw attention. Alright Ichiro-san!" Hikari squatted down so the child could dismount his shoulders and then he nodded. "Do you know what gacha games are?" Ichiro nodded quickly, a wide smile on his face. "Yes, ojisan! I love putting the tokens in the machine and getting the little prize! Sometimes I even with the big one! Last year, I won the grand prize from the Rainbow Arcade from one of the machines...a hundred tokens to play whatever games I wanted!" Hikari laughed and nodded. "And I bet you spent many little coins in those machines trying to win the prize, hm?" Ichiro nodded and then seemed to come to a sudden realization. "You think they'll do it here too?! But we don't have a machine!"

"Ah, but we are smart and resourceful samurai, Ichiro-san! We must use our heads. Do you remember old stories about pirates and buried treasure? Hiding their riches in the sand so they can keep it from their enemies and come get it later?" A series of rapid nods. "I'll look for a few wooden crates, Ichiro-san. How about you go down to the beach with this bucket and fill it with sand and come back. We can bury your treasures and the treasures we bought, bury them, and then we let people take a little shovel and play a gacha game of their own, eh?"

Handing over the bucket and the shovel, Hikari watched as Ichiro ran off to the beach to grab some sand. After every return trip, Hikari helped him bury trinkets in little quadrants of sand contained in the crates and then label them with small plastic pirate flags and little fishtank shipwrecks. "That'll do, I think...now, we just have to let people know we're open for business...let's get you head and shoulders above the competition again!" He scoops up Ichiro onto his shoulders again and clears his throat.

"Come one, come all! Dig for buried treasure of Captain Ichiro-san in the shipwreck cove!" Ichiro gave his best, "ARR!" in his small voice, growing more confident as the pair began to draw in bemused customers, eager to see what was going on. Small children not yet set up for the market, parents, and others besides who came to support the young samurai wandered through the space, giving small handfuls of coins to Ichiro to deposit in the payment box as Hikari bounced around, lending his voice to the task.

Once one of the customers to the pirate gacha dug up the token prize that corresponded to the lacquered chopstick set, Ichiro was handed a small party popper by Hikari, who fired it off, yipping with joy and congratulations to the player, a slightly older woman who kindly bowed to the pair of salesmen, who returned it. "Thank you for coming to Captain Ichiro's, obasaaaaan!"

Ichiro gave a giggle and spun around happily, shaking the payment box and listening to the rattle. Hikari smiled and nodded, looking out as the crowd began to disperse a bit, their sand boxes finally empty of prizes. "Well, Ichiro-san, that was a job well done...but I think you have one more sale to make!" The boy stopped spinning for a minute, tilting his head and walking over to Hikari, who had crouched once more. The Phoenix pulled the small set of antique coins from under the stall set up, turning them over in his hands.

"I think I want to buy these, if you will sell them. These coins are very old, and I know some people that might like them. What is your price for them?" Ichiro seemed a bit stunned that his friendly teacher would offer to buy them, but he recovered and lifted his hand to his chin, mimicking the familiar merchant pose that he had seen others strike up. "How about...one whole koku, ojisan?" Hikari gave an appraising, 'hmmm' as he looked over the coins once more. "I think that is too cheap, Ichiro-san. How about three?" Ichiro gasped and started, "But they're not worth that mu-," before Hikari raised a hand to stop him. "Maybe not to some, but I think so. You are being an honest merchant, Ichiro-san and I think that honesty should be rewarded." Reaching into his haori, he produced three koku, still a bit shiny, but worn about the edges from many transactions. "Besides...one koku is too small a treasure for Captain Ichiro, don't you think?"

The small Crab burst into a fit of giggles and nodded, taking the koku and putting them in his personal pouch. "Thank you, ojisan!" He leaned over and wrapped his arms around the Phoenix in a sudden hug, which Hikari lightly returned. "You are welcome, Ichiro-san...but I think it is time to return to your parents so you can tell them how well you did!" The pair rose and walked back over to Ichiro's parents, who listened intently as the lad explained the events of the market.

"You have a smart son, Yasuki-sans. I hope his career is as bright as the stars." And with that, Hikari bows and turns to take his leave.

Re: [Day 2 - Early Afternoon] Bid Event: My First Market

Post by Kakita Haruhi »

Haruhi had great sympathy for a child performing for their parents and community. A child under surely enormous pressure to perform flawlessly.

She could relate particularly since her patron Yasuki Reina had specifically arranged for Haruhi to help her daughter Yasuki Miho. Haruhi could not let her patron's daughter down! (Was this event the day after she arrived part of the reason the Yasuki had brought her to the planet? Surely it was just a coincidence.)

She would help! As she had been taught!

"Miho-san, I am here to help you. You are going to do beautifully. Nothing can beat the combination of art and practice. We are going to work tirelessly until the stand and marketing is flawless. The sales will happen if we do that."

Performing with a child was risky. Unpredictable. Like a live bird. But she would not let her fear show. No. She would make the child flawless. It was the way.

She remembered to ask the child what she had to sell.

Miho showed a collection of seashells that she had gathered on the beach. They were pretty enough.

Clearly the table needed a water feature! A triumph of engineering to create the appearance of a tide coming in and out on one half of the table (under glass of course) so it never quite touched the layers of sand on the other side, upon which the glorious seashells perched decorously.

Luckily, Haruhi was a highly trained engineer. Her specialty was avi-drones, but she could do a water feature in a pinch.

Next, their routine! She did not have local coastal avi-drones at the ready, but she had recordings from the beach where she had walked and searched yesterday. A solid ambient B-roll.

So, a song and dance.

She asked the girl if she knew any local Crab songs about the beach. By the Fortunes, she did! Far easier for the girl to teach a song she knew to Haruhi, than the reverse. And better a song the crowd knew. They would gather and join!

It would be Hamabe no uta (Song of the Seashore).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pvVEnZb ... rt_radio=1

The dance was a simple one. The two of them in unison, pantomiming walking (with that specific choreography that was clearly dancing, not walking, but 'read' to the viewer as walking), and emoting the lyrics - the sound of the wind, the flowing clouds in the sky, the waves washing the shore, the colors of the shells.

A gesture to the shells waiting to be sold on that line. Product placement achieved.

They did not have to add a verse that: "Hey, seashells are so hot right now, the Governor favored them above all other gifts". Some things did not need to be sung. They were more powerful by implication only.

And thus, crowd assembled, every last seashell was sold and at what could only be described as a 'well above market' price.

Flawless.

Miho was thrilled. Yasuki Reina gave a pleased nod.

"Nishi-kun? What's wrong?"

Kiyoshi and the Detective found Nisji sitting on a blanket looking disappointedly at his wares.

The boy looked up at the Fox, then at the monkey with some confusion.

"My name is Kiyoshi. This is the Detective. We're here to help you."

"But, all I have are shells." The child gestured at the collection he'd set out.

"These are very nice shells. You have a lot of variety here and you've taken good care of them."

"But, Miho and Kanna are selling them too!"

"Oh! You're worried about competition. That's understandable. I'm sure they have nice collections of their own. But, every shell is different, no matter how similar they look. I'm sure there are customers eager to buy what you have."

"There are?"

"Of course. We just need to get their attention."

Kiyoshi began to clap at a steady beat and encouraged the boy to join him. The Derective quickly joined as well and the Kitsune began to sing.

"Nishi-kun is selling shells gathered from the sea shore...
Won't you come see the shells Nishi has to sell...
So many shells from the sea for you to see and make them yours....
Come and see all the shells, Nishi has to sell..."

Kiyoshi was well aware of the effectiveness of a catchy jingle. He had performed so many he couldn't forget. No matter hiw hard he tried. He left Nishi and the Detective to continue the song where they were, while he walked around singing and guiding people back to the boy's lot.

It took some time, and a lot of singing, but Nishi sold his entire collection. He thanked the Detective and bowed to Kiyoshi before returning to his parents.

Ryosei had indeed volunteered to help with the first market. The Yasuki signing him up had given him a concerned look and certainly had pause but after consulting with a few of the guardians they found one that was happy to let Ryosei help them out.

When they found their stand he took one look at it and shook his head "No no, we can't run the best stall in the province looking like this." He too some time to spruce it up, adding some flair to it with a sign, banners, even a fish on the sign that moved by pulling a string.

It was excellent for certain but he was a little too distracted by making it to watch the kid as he went off and tried to buy more stuff for them to sell. The things he came back with were....less than stellar. Ryosei just shook his head "Come on let's go find some good stuff to move."

With that they dove in and found some amazing merch they could flip for awesome value.

Ryosei had learned quite a bit from his father about running a business as well as a few tips gained from running his own business and he felt he had done a good job teaching the kid a few things and helping him begin the path of mercantile greatness.

Tetsu looks down at the small Yasuki girl glowering at him.

"How did I get paired with a Kaiu?"

"Technically I'm a Fundai"

"Is that supposed to make things better?!?"

Tetsu runs fingers through his hair.

This is what me and Hoshiko have to look forward to?

"Look..."

"Machiko"

"Machiko. Look at table. It's basic. Look at the other tables. Basic. We can do better. You know as well as I do it's not what you have its how you sell it. "

It's amazing what a few simple tools and LED screens can do.

"Now...how cute you can be"

Machinko is VERY cute. Tetsu...not so much. It looks like they'll get noting for a moment until Machiko gives some sad eyes and half the table is done.

Post by Utaku Itsuka »

Young Natsu was very excited about all this. Perhaps a bit overexcited, even... especially considering the offer he had on hand. Some clothes, a few toys, but what he was most enthused about were a set of stones and shells he'd got from Nishi and Azuma beach, and a set of finger puppets. He was so sure they'd be a success, one'd have a hard time convincing him even that making a good case to get clients interested in them would be necessary.

Itsuka wasn't bad with children - they were often quite excited when going on trips, and she'd learned to play along.... although sometimes they took her heart to places she'd rather not visit.

Natsu's overenthusiasm somehow made that part easier, though. A few minutes with him and she had a good grasp of what she'd have to do... and that was holding him back a bit, so that he could fly later.

While convincing him that others needed to understand the value of his offers wasn't so easy, she quickly succeeded in getting him interested in setting up a good and nice stall for their goods. They ended up building something that was a bit like a puppet theatre, which could greatly help in making the finger puppets stand out.

What about the rocks and shells, though?

She then asked if he'd ever done 'finger plays' with his family. His overenthusiasm was even more stoked at the question - turns out he not only knew by heart 2 episodes of Starlight Miko Crusaders he'd staged with his siblings, he and his older sister had actually reenacted a full 20 minutes of a Susumu Yakumo show.

Now that was something they could leverage!

The went for an episode where the Crusaders play with a new, high-tech holorecorder... then actually find out it's a monster who's trying to take all of their beauty and happiness, and must defeat it! The shells and stones end up used partly as scenery, partly as characters (sneaky, fierce rock-shaped Hiruma Kaoru turned up delightful!). The second act with a fight between the Land and the Sea while Natsu sang two of Yakumo's latest hits (sligthly off-tune, but hey, it was still cute) was a success as well, and they gathered quite a crowd.

The sale still didn't come as easy, as many in the crowd were initially hesitant about buying Natsu's goods. How could he keep up his brilliant career as a finger-and-rock artist if they took his puppets and props, after all??

After he ensured them he still had plenty of other lucky charms as his cast for future productions, the Starlight Crusaders, the camera monster and the Land and Sea army were quite the hit, though.

A deep and heartfelt groan echoed inside Soratoshi as the situation was explained to him, but for the sake of inter-clan relations he kept the sound locked inside himself. Meeting his little buddy did little to change the Fox's mood - so little, in fact, that he continued to address him as "Buddy" throughout the day - but then the youngster mentioned modifying the simple table and blanket they'd been provided, and the engineer's heart genuinely soared as he set to work...

The event is closed.

The afternoon was filled with children and their assistants selling to both other children and adults alike. Some loving items were parted and found a home with new owners, while many children successfully gathered a sizeable savings for their future journey. While the event was filled with high energy, there was a bittersweet pang to it as it drew to a close.

For some Yasuki children (and some Crab youth participating in this event), this would be the last community event here before they were shipped off to schooling. Some would be destined for the Radiant Scales Dojo on Gakko Island, a few would remain home and train at the Stingray's Sting Dojo on Shiawase Island, and some would be destined for other training on shores far away.

Regardless of their future endeavours and careers, this was easily a learning experience they would cherish into their adulthood.
