[Expecting] Changing Your Tune Up (Day 0 - LA)

[Yoritomo Ochiba]

She joins the general movement toward sitting, and snacks, smoothing the simple burgundy traveling skirt as they go. "A storyteller?!" she chirps amiably. That's possibly the wrong interpretation, but the easiest to run with. "I can manage a decent tale, but my branch of Doji Suzume's descendants have moved more toward the stewardship of our historical heritage and education." The description has the cadence of something said often enough to roll smoothly off the tongue.

"Are you both here for Yasuki-sama's anniversary celebration then? Or just happened to take a vacation at the right time to catch it?"

"Uh, yeah, yeah a storyteller you know."
Storytellers were usually pretty poor after all. Ochiba's eyes glaze over slightly at even the bare mention of stewardship of historical heritage and education.

"Yeah, I'm officially here on duty for the celebrations and all that. But hey, if you're a local...."
she drops her voice
"So the Governor looks like a baddie? And she's ex-special forces? Is she actually a looker or are we just dealing with some typical Yasuki massaging of the goods on sale?"

“Ah, yeah. A friend of mine owns Crabkaku. I highly recommend visiting it.” Nagisa suddenly speaks, now carrying various snack bags and bottles of juice, though she kept a bottle of tea for herself. She handed each out, glancing over to her densai. “Oh, I should note a few things before I lose track of my thoughts. Continue on with your chat.”

"Awesome, thanks! Oh-" belatedly "Yeah I'm Ochiba of the Yoritomo by the way...you got the details on those forms and such but, you know, formally and all."

Suh-Hyun chuckled at that, "I see, my first time outside of Unicorn space really. No, not entirely true, its my first time outside of my own clan's space in a friendly capacity. Usually my interactions with those outside my clan was from the position of being in the hosting party. As for your statue, I suppose it is better then an unflattering picture with an equally unflattering caption. I take it you are well travelled then?"

"Oh yeah, I travel for my duties, the further from Mantis space the better. Your clan is always a pleasant visit, lots of wonderful spices and rare things. And everyone always has an Ide around to explain where things are at when it gets heated."

She salutes Sub-Hyun and her clan with the juice box.
"But you're military, might be we just missed eachother a few times. Lucky me, they say you guys are the fastest and the best."

[Suzume Hitomi]

"Uh, yeah, yeah a storyteller you know."

Hitomi pressed her lips together tightly on the impulse to cough up her mouthful of juice, swallowing carefully as her neck reddened. If she had a mirror, she'd have been pleased to see how well the morning's makeup was still holding up, almost entirely hiding the color certainly rising to her cheeks.

"I...don't think I'm the best judge of that, and I'm sure there's no goods on sale there!" she finally sputtered. If Ayame was hunting for a match it certainly wasn't going to be through the current scheme. "She's well-liked here and seems to take her duties serious, including her service with Crab forces." A half shrug accompanies her lack of knowledge of Crab military activities, "not that I know anything about her time before taking over from her father here."

[Shinjo Suh-Hyun]

"Ahhh, it's not so interesting!" she shakes her head with an embarrassed smile that's quickly hidden behind the bottle of juice as she drinks. Composure gathered along with hydration, she continues after a moment, "It's just that the Empire's so big now, not everyone gets to visit our original home. I want to bring what we know out where more people can appreciate it. And...well, that takes funding." Her shoulders lift in a shrug of gentle green linen, "a shop seemed like a viable experiment to raise funds, and provide exposure and education, you know?"

"What sort of business are you representing then, Shinjo-sama?" she asks, professional interest laced with genuine curiosity."

"Ahhh, I see. A noble endeavor yes? The Empire is far flung these days and it would do us well to remember our homeland. Even my own clan, wanderlust stricken as we are." Suh-Hyun smiles warmly, though it grows more nervous at the question. "Well...you see I was expecting to be something of an aide. But it seems I'm more on my own at the moment. I am not really representing a company per say. Still one does what one must."

"I am glad my clan has left a good impression. My home, or birthplace at least, is the vast orbital station of Shinjo's Grace. And even if we were on station at the same time, well the chances of a meeting would have been low." Suh-Hyun takes a sip of her juice, "And there is what you mentioned. I was on a carrier for some time and even now I'm stationed at one of the more isolated postings."

She rolls her eyes
“This will be much more fun. And I mean, no wonder she’s well liked. I used to have posters of samurai like her hanging in my dorm.”

“Oh, the Grace? Nice. Void born get it, you know? Not like some land born. No offence Suzume-san, I bet you’d be great on a ship.”

Crunching some snacks pensively
“Only ever saw the one unicorn carrier up close. Scary shit. Hoping I never do again. I bet everything here feels very slow by comparison. No offence, Suzume-san.”

Frowning slightly
“Maybe just that that a given. I’ll let you know if I’m purposely trying to offence you, Suzume-san.”

Suh-Hyun chuckled, "People tend to get weirded out when I say I feel more comfortable in tight corridors, with recycled air, and people everywhere. But it's just what one grows comfortable with. And of course the stars as seen from an observation deck on a ship glitter far brighter then through atmosphere."

"Even devoid of its fighter complement a carrier is a scary ship. Though significantly reduced." She turned the juice cup in her hand and her voice grows softer, "My experience was a lot of slow punctuated by extreme jumps in violence. It's different and jarring, and perhaps not the best topic for friendly discussion." She takes another sip a more weary smile returning to her face, "But I will say there's not much else that makes one feel alive then hurtling through space surrounded by death and trying to weave your way through it and out the other side."

After another sip her smile is back to friendly warmth, "Even without people shooting at you there is something, well hard to describe about flying. I would recommend trying it sometime if you get the chance. Pulling a hard turn and driving gravity up so it feels like a whole planet is pushing down on you. Vision blurring and then zip you are out and everything snaps back into focus, every instrument in the cockpit screaming at you."

[Suzume Hitomi]

"One hopes it's a noble endeavor, even as mercantile sensibilities creep into this portion of it," she says with a small smile. "Many of my own clan feel that wanderlust and travel as researchers or with the Imperial legions or bureaucracy. But most take comfort that home doesn't change much and will always be there for them when they return. I certainly do."

At the Shinjo's admission of being sent somewhat unprepared, her eyebrow twitches up in surprise before being corralled into a properly noncommittal expression once more. "Oh? Well they must have a lot of confidence in your ability to handle whatever they throw you into, neh? I imagine you aren't the only one working on developing contracts that cut across multiple clan holdings rather than fronting for a particular large company. Sounds a bit similar to the Minor Clan Alliance's options here, honestly."

Merrily “Full price then! Good thing I can afford it. I was worried the governor would be some old boring dude, you know the type, where your tea ceremony has to have its own tea ceremony and then everyone stands around pretending to critique a long drawing.”

Hitomi blinks twice, begins to speak, takes a breath and firmly, cheerily, turns to the topic of Shinjo's Grace. "I've heard the station is a wonder of design and the planet is lovely as well, with a good deal of wild spaces."

“Oh, the Grace? Nice. Void born get it, you know? Not like some land born. No offence Suzume-san, I bet you’d be great on a ship.”

Hitomi takes a long moment to drain the last of her juice, an excellent excuse to hold her tongue a bit longer.

"I certainly appreciate that you're not offensive on purpose, Yoritomo-sama, that's...well it's something. Yes it is." She wonders if the Yoritomo shipbuilders some other Sparrow courtier would have to deal with if they couldn't scrape together enough to go elsewhere were going to sound like this. Well, they wouldn't be *her* problem, but she could feel some distant future sympathy for them. "That said, I think you'll server yourself and your clan better if you don't refer to Yasuki-sama as if she's some 2 bu poster pinup girl. At least among her family here." Some of the Hida might join in for all she knew.

"I was honestly pretty spacesick from the jump onward getting here, so I'll likely not be on spaceships overmuch if I can help it. Better for those as are comfortable there to serve in space. It's very vast, and beautiful in a fearsome way, like volcanoes and the storms that rip up here from the sea."

She moved to a convenient faucet to refill her bottle, speaking over her shoulder. "Anyway, I had some posters of actors from historical serial dramas. Now I have landscapes." She stares at her juice-now-water bottle a moment before drinking, the voice of several Doji lecturers echoing in memory. "If you are looking for such posters, I can tell you where they're likely to be found in the shopping district."

Suh-Hyun chuckles, "Oh I am sure it's something like that, the confidence I mean." She leans back, "Huh, I suppose it is a comfort to think of the stable comfort one's home. For my blood though, the thought of coming home for longer then it takes to resupply and head back out is dreadfully boring. Always something new out n the great void. Even in 'tamed' space."

"Good that the Empire has tasks enough for everyone to find duties that suit them well, if they have the opportunity, and your ancestors have been wandering longer than my clan's existed. I suppose this is one more new thing then, neh? Where is home for the time you're here?"

"Nah, I'm my ship's XO. Keep everything and everyone running on time. Did a little piloting when I first started out but it's not one of my many, many strengths. It requires a certain patience I've never had. My captain is a good man, saw my potential, wouldn't have stayed on if he didn't. Imagine it's not quite as flexible for your lot."

"I did use to like those dramas, the ones where they're all in period costume? Used to dream of owning clothes like that...huh, maybe I will. Your store sell any historical clothes?"
Now, clearly enthused by the idea.
"Hells yes...yeah, costume party could totally do one of those. No posters of landscapes though, I'm not a hundred years old. But the clothes, yeah that's a great idea Suzume-san."

"Speed isn't the only issue." She smirks at the wink, "It's being mostly confined to 2 dimensions. I mean you can get creative and dip, or would it be raise up, into the third dimension. You just don't have much you can do up there in a car." The Unicorn runs her head through her hair, "I suppose feeling the wind is one advantage over flying, but small sacrifice really."

"I'll take your word on the car, rarely drive them, always was much easier to get a motorbike around Shinjo's Grace or really most stations that allowed vehicles. Also I like the ride better on a bike, you really have to be more aware of every part and position of your body to keep balance." She glances outside at the Yoritomo's car, "Does look like you picked a fast one. Not surprised it's a Crab brand. Their high performance luxury line neh?"

I don't expect a communique, but better safe than sorry."

She wouldn't have expected any interest in historical clothing. Then again, the dramas really played up the decorative parts, and the Mantis were known to be gaudy. Any samurai in those dramas that came across as both scandalously underclothed and tastelessly over-decorated was going to turn out to be Mantis clan, and probably a villain. They *were* mostly Imperial-funded dramas on the channels Suzume grew up watching, after all.

Hitomi nods, "we have replicas, mostly very ornate ones, made in the traditional methods. A fair few of our customers are looking for special occasion wear. But they're rather expensive. A few shops in the Shotengai would offer costumes suitable for a costume party--the fan shops with things from current dramas, and Run-it-Back for older versions of those."

Hitomi offers the smile customers with far more money than wit get in her shop for their corny remarks, the smile that says 'oh, that was funny, but laughing out loud wouldn't be proper. Just know that it was noticed.' Honestly, the truly hilarious ones get the same smile. Far too many of them didn't actually mean to be funny, after all, and the smile is very multi-purpose.

"Ah, the embassy. Certainly good to keep contact. I'm in the district often enough sending messages. I believe the Exchange is a much nicer building than the Nest, so I expect it to be quite comfortable."

"Now costumes...well, with the weather here, personal temperators are very popular to allow winter court styles in the season coming up. Our 'winter' is a bit warm for them. So you could probably enjoy more historical accuracy than you'd expect!" Did she have any furs in the back room? This was probably the time to brush them off.

"Well, if you stop by, I'll be happy to show you what we have! I should be getting back though, I like to make sure things are settled before we lock up for the night."

She looks smug, clearly considering herself a premier car acceleration noticing tourist.

"Oh I can afford the good stuff. Buuuuut if they're no good for dancing that's rough. No wonder folk back then were so miserable all the time. Still, I'm definitely gonna come by and take a look, I need a whole new wardrobe."

Offering Hitomi a casual wave. "Good luck with the shop and all. I'll probably be seeing you later."

Turning back to Suh-Hyun
"Speaking of. Yo, your bike got room for two or am I shuttling around like some peon back to my place? If you're in I'll pay you in beer."

Suh-Hyun glanced back at the scooter she rode in on. "I can't promise a dignified ride but yes it can fit two, if you don't mind grappling the driver. Where exactly am I taking you anyway?"

She waved to the departing Suzume, "Take care Suzume-san. I look forward to visiting your shop!"

“So if you don’t mind being seen near these I’m easy. Got this penthouse down by the waterfront somewhere, should be easy to spot.”

Suh-Hyun laughed, "Alright, I would ask if you need a helmet but to be frank, I think I know the answer and it's you don't wear helmets." She waved off the two displayed arms. "I have seen more outlandish tattoos, remember I share a clan with the Moto. So I suppose you're the first customer on the Suh-Hyun shuttle service."

Suh-Hyun laughed, "Alright, I would ask if you need a helmet but to be frank, I think I know the answer and it's you don't wear helmets." She waved off the two displayed arms.
